London Marathon Considers Historic Two-Day Format for 2027
The iconic London Marathon, a staple of the capital's sporting calendar since 1981, is poised for a significant transformation. Organisers are engaged in advanced talks to extend the event across two days in 2027, a move designed to accommodate soaring demand and double the number of runners. Traditionally held on a single day, the marathon has seen participant numbers swell, prompting this innovative proposal to shift to a weekend format.
Official Statements and Strategic Vision
A spokesperson for the TCS London Marathon confirmed the discussions, stating, "We are continually exploring innovative ways to enable more people to take part, while delivering positive benefits for London. Together with our partners and stakeholders, we are looking at the intention for the 2027 event to take place across two days." They emphasised that no approval has been granted yet, with the immediate focus remaining on the 2026 edition scheduled for Sunday, 26 April.
Chief Executive Hugh Brasher echoed this sentiment, highlighting the event's global popularity and commitment to inclusivity. "We are always exploring innovative ways to enable more people to take part and to deliver positive benefits for London," he said. Brasher noted the collaborative effort with partners and stakeholders, essential for staging the marathon in the heart of the capital.
Record-Breaking Demand and Economic Impact
The push for expansion is driven by unprecedented interest. For the 2026 marathon, a staggering 1,133,813 applications were received through the public ballot, marking a 36% increase from 2024. This surge in participation translated into a record fundraising total of £87.3 million, the highest in the event's history. Additionally, the 2025 marathon set a Guinness World Record with 56,640 finishers, underscoring its scale and appeal.
Support from City Leadership
The Mayor of London's office has expressed support for the potential change. A spokesperson remarked, "London is the sporting capital of the world, and the Mayor looks forward to working with London Marathon partners to consider if it might be possible to host an event that will run across two days next year." This alignment with city officials suggests a strong backing for the initiative, which aims to amplify the marathon's original mission of fostering happiness and achievement.
Looking Ahead to 2026 and Beyond
While plans for 2027 are under discussion, organisers remain focused on delivering an exceptional experience for the 2026 marathon. The event continues to be a major highlight in the global running calendar, with its potential expansion reflecting a proactive approach to meeting growing public enthusiasm and enhancing its legacy in London's sporting landscape.
