Harry Maguire Confident of Securing New Manchester United Deal
Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has expressed strong confidence in reaching an agreement for a new contract with the club, though he stressed that any deal must be based on mutual benefit rather than sentimental attachment. The 33-year-old centre-back, who joined United from Leicester City for £80 million in 2019, has been a consistent presence in the team since Michael Carrick took over as manager in January.
Contract Talks Progressing Smoothly
According to sources from the Press Association, negotiations for a new contract are advancing positively. Maguire's current deal is set to expire midway through the upcoming World Cup tournament, but he remains optimistic about staying at Old Trafford. "I think there's been talks," Maguire stated. "I think we'll reach an agreement where it's best for the club and myself. What that agreement is, I'm sure you'll find out over the next few weeks."
He added that he expects the situation to be resolved soon, whether he stays or leaves, but believes it will be sorted out promptly. Maguire emphasized his love for the club but made it clear that any decision must align with both his career goals and the club's ambitions. "I don't want to be staying on a sentimental value. I want to be staying because I want to be there and the club want me to drive the club forward still," he explained.
Impact of Managerial Changes and Team Performance
Since Carrick's appointment, Maguire has been an ever-present figure in the squad, contributing to United's rise to third place in the Premier League. This resurgence has also earned him a recall to the England national team, where he is part of Thomas Tuchel's final squad before World Cup selections. Maguire praised Carrick's work, particularly the "smooth" transition from a back three to a back four, a tactical shift that has allowed him to play more aggressively as a defender.
Reflecting on the previous manager, Ruben Amorim, Maguire had kind words despite the tactical struggles. "I don't really have much bad to say about Ruben. I really like Ruben, I think he's got great ideas. The ideas just didn't work at Manchester United," he said. Maguire acknowledged that players must share responsibility for the team's earlier issues but credited Amorim for building a solid squad foundation.
Team Dynamics and Future Prospects
The formation change has also benefited younger players like midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who has returned to the England set-up after 18 months away. Maguire described Mainoo as "magnificent" and noted his impressive turnaround, from potentially going on loan to contending for a World Cup spot. Mainoo is also in talks for a new contract, highlighting the positive atmosphere within the squad.
Maguire joked about having "a long time off" to sort out his contract after receiving a red card in a recent 2-2 draw at Bournemouth, which he called a "bad end to a good day" following his England recall. As discussions continue, Maguire remains focused on contributing to United's success, with both personal and club interests at the forefront of negotiations.
