Manchester City are maintaining a firm silence regarding the future of defender John Stones, as speculation intensifies that the England international will depart the club when his current contract concludes at the end of this season.
Contract Expiry and Trophy-Laden Career
The 31-year-old centre-back, who transferred from Everton to the Etihad Stadium in 2016, has accumulated an impressive collection of honours during his tenure with City. His trophy cabinet includes a prestigious Champions League title, two FA Cup victories, and an outstanding six Premier League championships.
Stones is reportedly hopeful that Pep Guardiola's squad can secure a seventh, and what appears to be his final, league triumph with the club before his deal officially runs out in the coming months.
Emerging Reports and Club Response
In the lead-up to Wednesday's match against Burnley, reports surfaced indicating that the England defender would be leaving Manchester City at the conclusion of the current campaign. It is suggested that an official announcement could potentially follow as early as next week.
This development comes shortly after City confirmed last Thursday that their captain, Bernardo Silva, will also be departing this summer. When approached by the Press Association for comment on Stones' future, the club declined to provide any statement or clarification.
Guardiola's Comments and Injury Concerns
During a press conference on Tuesday, manager Pep Guardiola was directly questioned about whether there was any clarity regarding Stones' future at Manchester City. Guardiola responded succinctly, stating, "No."
He added, "The only thing I can say is that he is back for already two, three weeks. Monday he was training with us and this is the best news."
The 2025/26 season has been challenging for Stones due to persistent injury issues, limiting him to just 15 appearances across all competitions. He recently returned to the bench for Sunday's critical 2-1 victory over Arsenal, having recovered from a calf problem sustained while on international duty last month.
International Prospects and Managerial Support
England national team boss Thomas Tuchel has expressed strong admiration for John Stones, describing him as a "world class" centre-back. Despite the defender's limited playing time this season, Tuchel emphasised that Stones has "credit in the bank" concerning his selection for the upcoming World Cup.
When asked last month if he would make an exception for Stones regarding his lack of recent match minutes, Tuchel remarked, "I don't know yet, but if you come to the World Cup you should be fit. So when he came (to camp), he was fit. He did not have a lot of minutes, but he has a level of game understanding."
Tuchel further explained, "So the exception of the rule means that he does not start a lot. I can see that because I'm a big fan and I know what he brings to the team in terms of personality, attitude and quality game understanding."
