Manchester United Express Frustration but Maintain Champions League Hope
Manchester United manager Marc Skinner has voiced his frustration following his team's narrow defeat to Bayern Munich in the Women's Champions League quarter-final first leg, yet he remains confident about overturning the result in the second leg.
First Leg Defeat at Old Trafford
The match at Old Trafford on Wednesday ended in a 3-2 victory for Bayern Munich, putting the German side in a favourable position ahead of the return fixture. United found themselves trailing early due to two goals from Bayern's Pernille Harder, but they fought back with a penalty from Maya Le Tissier and a header from Hanna Lundkvist.
The decisive moment came in the 84th minute when Momoko Tanikawa scored for Bayern, securing their win. Skinner expressed disappointment with his team's defensive performance, particularly in allowing Harder to exploit spaces.
Skinner stated: "I'm frustrated with all the three goals – I don't think they had to particularly earn them. I felt that we left the spaces for Pernille Harder to run through twice."
Confidence for the Second Leg
Despite the setback, Skinner emphasised his team's resilience and belief in their ability to progress. He highlighted that Bayern adapted their usual possession-based style to a more direct approach, which United now need to counter in the upcoming match.
Skinner added: "But what I know about this team is that they'll be open and honest with that and obviously we've got another leg to try and turn it around and fix it. We're still in this tie for sure. Now we need to go to the Allianz and win."
Upcoming Challenges
United face a demanding schedule, with a crucial Women's Super League match against rivals Manchester City on Saturday before the second leg in Munich. Skinner acknowledged the difficulty but sees it as an opportunity to test his squad's depth and character.
Skinner commented: "It will challenge us, it will take us to the depths, but the carrot is there for us in both games. We expect it to be difficult."
Bayern Munich's Cautious Approach
Bayern Munich manager Jose Barcala, while pleased with the victory, urged his team to remain grounded and focused on the next game. He stressed the importance of learning from the first leg and making necessary adjustments.
Barcala said: "We need to stay with our feet on the earth, humble and keep looking forward for the next game. It's important we learn things from this game and adjust for the second leg."
The stage is set for an intense second leg at the Allianz Arena, where Manchester United will aim to overcome their one-goal deficit and secure a spot in the semi-finals of the Women's Champions League.
