Manchester United Assistant Steve Holland Sets Lofty Ambitions for Final Stretch

Steve Holland, the assistant coach at Manchester United, has issued a clear directive to the dressing room as the season approaches its climax. He asserts that the team must not merely settle for securing a top-four finish and a return to the Champions League. Instead, Holland emphasizes that the ambition for a club of United's stature should always be to challenge for the Premier League title.

Focus on Winning Matches, Not Just Qualification

In a recent interview with the club's official website, Holland outlined his philosophy. "I think the language we should be using at this club is to finish as close as we possibly can to the top," he stated. "I don't know how possible that is, but that has to be the challenge always: to get as close as we possibly can to the top."

He explained that the coaching staff has been encouraging players to concentrate on winning each remaining match, rather than fixating on the positions of rival teams below them in the table. "We've been speaking more to the players really about winning our matches, rather than thinking too much about what's happening below," Holland added.

Context of United's Season and Current Standing

Manchester United have enjoyed a resurgence under interim head coach Michael Carrick, who took over from Ruben Amorim in January. The team has no European commitments this season after a disappointing 2024-25 campaign, leaving them with just seven Premier League fixtures remaining.

Currently sitting third in the league, United hold a seven-point advantage over sixth-placed Chelsea, positioning them well for Champions League qualification. However, Holland believes that should not be the ultimate goal. "Clearly given the context, to finish in the Champions League places would be a good situation for us, but I think always we should be looking for more than that," he remarked.

Carrick's Impact and Player Endorsement

Steve Holland joined Manchester United as part of Michael Carrick's coaching team midway through the season. Carrick's interim tenure has been impressive, with the team winning seven and losing only one of his ten matches in charge. This strong performance has made him a serious candidate for the permanent head coach role.

During a training camp in the Republic of Ireland, player Amad publicly backed Carrick for the full-time position. "From a personal view he's the right man. He has a lot of experience; he knows the club and has the DNA," Amad said. "His relationship with every player is very good. Sometimes this kind of manager can bring the club where they belong."

Amad further expressed the squad's satisfaction, noting, "It's not the players who decide but my honest opinion is we're really happy to have Michael Carrick as a manager."

Looking Ahead to the Final Games

As Manchester United prepare for their remaining Premier League matches, the message from Steve Holland is unequivocal. The club must strive for excellence and not be content with merely achieving a top-four finish. This demand reflects a broader ambition to restore United to the pinnacle of English football, aligning with the expectations of fans and the legacy of the club.

The final stretch of the season will be crucial in determining whether this mindset translates into on-pitch success, potentially influencing decisions about Carrick's future and the team's trajectory for the next campaign.
