Manchester United have secured their return to the Champions League after a crucial win over Liverpool, with Michael Carrick achieving his aim of guiding the club back to Europe's elite competition. The victory not only sealed qualification but also guaranteed a significant financial boost, with the club set to earn approximately £16.1 million for reaching the league phase, based on this season's figures.
This prize money is just the starting point; United could earn an additional £1.8 million for each victory in the league phase and £600,000 for every draw. However, the club faces a busy summer ahead, including the appointment of a permanent manager, to ensure they are competitive on multiple fronts.
Potential Champions League Opponents
Supporters can already begin to dream of high-profile European nights. The new league phase, which United have yet to experience, consists of eight matches against two opponents from each of four pots, determined by UEFA coefficients over the past five years. Each team plays four home and four away games.
With 36 teams in the competition, nine sides are placed in each pot. As things stand, Pot 1 is expected to include Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, Manchester City, Arsenal, Barcelona, and Bayer Leverkusen. However, Atletico Madrid could displace one of these if they eliminate Arsenal and win the Champions League. Leverkusen have not yet guaranteed their place, which could see Atletico slot in as the 10th-highest ranked side.
United cannot be drawn against clubs from their own nation, meaning they will face two of Bayern, Real Madrid, PSG, Inter, Barcelona, and either Atletico or Leverkusen. The picture becomes more complex for Pot 2, which is likely to include Borussia Dortmund and Porto, who have won the Portuguese title. Jose Mourinho's side and Sporting are also ranked highly enough for Pot 2 but are battling for second place in Portugal and must come through a playoff round.
With Tottenham, Frankfurt, and Atalanta ranked above Manchester United (who sit 21st in the coefficient) but failing to qualify, and only one of Sporting or Benfica able to enter, United have a reasonable chance of landing in Pot 2, though it remains uncertain.
Other Qualified Teams
Villarreal and PSV Eindhoven have also secured their spots. Villarreal are expected to be in Pot 4, while PSV, as Dutch champions, are likely in Pot 3.
Carrick's Reaction
Despite guiding the team back to the Champions League, Carrick does not want his squad to 'over celebrate', though he is satisfied with the outcome. 'I think the work that's been done and the players, the way they've performed, and the teams that we've played against and got good results against, I think it's something that we can take a lot from, for sure,' Carrick said. 'I think it was well in the distance, a little bit, if we're honest, at one point. So there has been a lot of good work to put us in a position with three games to go and get that sealed. But it's not something we've spoke about as a group really. I think it's not something we over-celebrate. I think it's a step. We want more. We want to be finishing higher up the league but, certainly there is huge credit deserved that goes to the players and the staff, for putting us in this position, at this stage.'
