Manchester United are in line for a substantial financial boost, thanks to a piece of clever negotiation conducted when midfielder Scott McTominay departed the club.
The Smart Deal That Keeps on Giving
Scott McTominay ended his two-decade association with Manchester United in the summer of 2024, completing a move to Italian giants Napoli for a fee of €30.5 million, equivalent to £25.7 million. While the sale of a respected academy graduate surprised some sections of the fanbase, the Red Devils' hierarchy had the foresight to include a lucrative clause in the agreement.
As part of the transfer terms, United secured a 10 per cent sell-on fee, entitling them to a slice of any future profit Napoli make on the Scottish international. This clause is now looking increasingly valuable as McTominay's stock continues to rise dramatically in Serie A.
McTominay's Meteoric Rise in Italy
Since his arrival in Naples, the 29-year-old has transformed into one of European football's most formidable midfielders. His impact was immediate and profound; in his debut season, McTominay was instrumental in driving Antonio Conte's side to the Serie A title, a performance that earned him the prestigious Player of the Season award in Italy.
His contribution of 13 goals in 36 appearances across all competitions was so impressive it even led to a nomination for the Ballon d'Or, ultimately won by Ousmane Dembele. His excellence has not been confined to club football, either. McTominay, who qualifies for Scotland through his father, scored a spectacular overhead kick in a 4-2 victory over Denmark in November, sealing Scotland's first World Cup qualification since 1998.
Financial Windfall and Shock Return Rumours
McTominay's outstanding form has seen his market value soar. According to Transfermarkt, he is now valued at approximately €45 million (£40 million), with two-and-a-half years remaining on his Napoli contract. Should the Italian club, currently sitting third and just two points behind leaders Inter, sell him at that valuation, Manchester United would receive a welcome £4 million directly from the clause.
However, reports suggest Napoli could command a fee as high as £60 million for their star man, which would see United's bonus payment increase to £6 million. Intriguingly, speculation has emerged that United themselves could be a potential destination. With manager Ruben Amorim facing a midfield shortage due to injuries to Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes, and uncertainty over the long-term futures of several players, a sensational return to Old Trafford has been mooted by outlets such as CaughtOffside.
The situation has forced Amorim to utilise 18-year-old academy product Jack Fletcher and even deploy defender Lisandro Martinez in midfield, highlighting the need for reinforcements. While other names like Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton and former United player James Garner are also linked, the prospect of McTominay's return adds a fascinating layer to what began as a straightforward sale with a very smart safety net.
