Manchester United have received a significant defensive boost ahead of their Premier League return against Leeds United on Monday, with manager Michael Carrick confirming that Lisandro Martinez is available to replace the suspended Harry Maguire.
Martinez Returns from Calf Injury
The Argentine defender has been sidelined for United's last five matches due to a calf problem, with his most recent appearance dating back to the 1-1 draw against West Ham on February 10. However, Martinez traveled with the squad to Ireland for a four-day training camp this week and has now been declared fit for selection.
"He's back training, which is great, and back on the grass," Carrick stated. "But we've certainly got to make the right decision and make sure he's ready."
Maguire's Suspension Creates Defensive Dilemma
Harry Maguire will miss the Leeds encounter after receiving a one-match ban for conceding a penalty in United's 2-2 draw with Bournemouth. The England international could face further disciplinary action if found guilty of improper conduct toward fourth official Matt Donohue during that match.
With Matthijs de Ligt still recovering from a persistent back injury that has kept him out since November 30, United's central defensive options are limited. Martinez now joins Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven as the only available centre-backs for the crucial fixture.
Carrick's Cautious Approach
The United manager emphasized that Martinez's return would be carefully managed, despite the defensive shortage. "It's just that call that we make," Carrick explained. "We wouldn't be pushed into anything. I think it's important that the boys are ready."
Carrick's comments suggest Martinez may not be guaranteed an immediate starting position, with the coaching staff weighing his match fitness against the team's defensive needs.
Additional Injury Updates
Patrick Dorgu, who has been absent since January 25 with a hamstring injury, also traveled to Ireland but remains unavailable for selection. Meanwhile, de Ligt's recovery continues to progress slowly, with Carrick revealing the Dutch defender wasn't included in the training camp because "he's not quite on the grass yet."
"He's in the gym and doing work but he's not quite on the grass and he's not ready for that yet," Carrick added regarding de Ligt's rehabilitation. "Sometimes it happens quicker than others and sometimes there's things that don't quite go to plan."
The manager's update suggests de Ligt may not feature again this season, compounding United's defensive concerns as they prepare for their first match in 24 days.
