Rory McIlroy to Host Masters Champions' Dinner with Strict Seating Protocol
Rory McIlroy returns to Augusta National next week as the reigning Masters champion, poised to host the exclusive champions' dinner for fellow Green Jacket winners. However, the Northern Irish superstar will be acutely aware of an unwritten golden rule governing the prestigious gathering: certain seating areas are off-limits, particularly near golfing legends Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.
Unwritten Rules Revealed by Scheffler and Spieth
Scottie Scheffler, who first experienced the dinner in 2023 after his 2022 Masters win, and Jordan Spieth, the 2015 champion, have both shed light on the subtle protocols. During a press conference at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Scheffler explained, "There's a little protocol. Guys have, like, I would say, sections where they sit. But you move around a little bit. There are no necessarily assigned seats, but I'm definitely not going to sit in the area where Tiger and Jack sit."
Spieth playfully compared the seating dynamics to a school classroom, noting, "It's kind of like 6th, 7th grade. If the teacher they have assigned seats you get all bummed, and if they let you sit wherever you want you end up sitting in the same spot anyways." He added, "There's a certain section on the far side from where we sit where you don't sit, because it's Jack and Tiger. And that's where Arnie [Palmer] was."
Scheffler's Cautious Approach to Seating Arrangements
Scheffler recounted his own experience navigating the dinner's social nuances. "Zach [Woods] and Jordan [Spieth] always sat next to each other, and I definitely didn't ask Jordan to sit by him, because he would have done something to make sure that I didn't have a place to sit," he said. "So I kind of looked at Zach, I was like, 'Hey, where are you sitting this year?' And he told me, and he was nice and let me join him. But I definitely wasn't going to ask Jordan for that because he would have messed with me."
Potential Absence of Tiger Woods
This year's dinner may see one notable empty chair, as five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods has announced he is temporarily stepping away from golf following a recent car crash in Florida. Woods was arrested and charged with driving under the influence after the incident. In a statement on social media, he wrote, "I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritise my wellbeing and work toward lasting recovery."
McIlroy's Culinary Offerings for the Evening
Despite the seating formalities, Scheffler and Spieth will both enjoy McIlroy's curated menu, which features:
- Wagyu filet mignon and seared salmon as main courses.
- Appetisers including bacon-wrapped dates stuffed with goat's cheese, yellowfin tuna carpaccio, foie gras, toasted baguette with chives, and elk sliders.
- Sticky toffee pudding for dessert.
The dinner, held two days before the Masters tournament begins, remains a cherished tradition where champions celebrate their achievements while adhering to time-honoured, albeit unwritten, customs.
