France forward Kylian Mbappe edged tantalisingly close to his nation's all-time goalscoring record with a sublime chipped finish during a 2-1 friendly victory over Brazil. The match, held at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, marked the first of two fixtures for both sides in the final international break before this summer's World Cup.
Mbappe's Moment of Magic
In a first-half breakthrough, Mbappe latched onto a perfectly weighted through ball from teammate Ousmane Dembele. The Real Madrid star surged clear of the Brazilian defence, demonstrating his blistering pace, before delicately lifting the ball over the advancing goalkeeper Ederson. This exquisite finish brought his international tally to 56 goals in just 95 appearances for Les Bleus.
This landmark strike leaves the 27-year-old forward merely one goal shy of equalling the longstanding record held by veteran striker Olivier Giroud, who has scored 57 times for France.
A Tense Encounter in Massachusetts
The friendly encounter proved to be a fiercely contested affair. Brazil responded strongly after falling behind, creating several chances and applying sustained pressure on the French defence. Their efforts were bolstered when French defender Dayot Upamecano received a red card for a professional foul, clipping Wesley as the Brazilian threatened to break through on goal.
Despite being a man down, France displayed resilience and extended their lead. Substitute Michael Olise provided a precise pass for Hugo Ekitike, who calmly finished past Ederson to make it 2-0.
Mbappe was subsequently substituted in the 67th minute, replaced by Marcus Thuram, denying him an immediate opportunity to draw level with Giroud during the match. Brazil managed a late consolation goal through defender Bremer, but France held on to secure a narrow 2-1 victory.
Record in Sight Against Colombia
Attention now turns to France's next friendly fixture against Colombia on 29 March in Maryland. Mbappe is widely expected to feature and will likely have his first chance to equal, and potentially surpass, Olivier Giroud's historic goalscoring record for the national team.
Off the pitch, the forward has recently addressed speculation regarding his fitness. He firmly denied rumours of a misdiagnosed knee injury by Real Madrid's medical staff and has publicly stated that any previous knee-related issues are "truly behind me," signalling his readiness for the challenges ahead.
