Manchester United forward Bryan Mbeumo has voiced his disappointment following Cameroon's elimination from the African Cup of Nations, with his early return to club duty now imminent.
Cameroon's AFCON Journey Ends in Quarter-Finals
The Indomitable Lions saw their tournament hopes dashed on 10th January 2026 with a 2-0 defeat to Morocco. Brahim Diaz opened the scoring for the Atlas Lions, with Ismael Saibara securing their place in the semi-finals with a second goal.
Speaking after the match, Mbeumo did not hide his emotions. "I am really sad," the United star admitted. He pinpointed a slow start as a key factor in the loss: "Unfortunately, in the first half, we were a bit reluctant to play, and I think that is one of the only regrets we can have tonight."
Despite the defeat, Mbeumo found positives in the second-half performance, stating his team controlled the game apart from the conceded goal. "We didn't play our football and we saw in the second half that we were a much better team on the ball," he added, congratulating Morocco for taking their chances.
Club Boost Amidst United Overhaul
While a blow for Cameroon, Mbeumo's premature exit from the continental tournament is a timely boost for a Manchester United squad in a state of flux. The club is currently undergoing a major overhaul, with manager Ruben Amorim recently sacked and talks underway regarding a potential interim return for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Mbeumo, who joined United from Brentford last summer, has made a strong start to his Old Trafford career, scoring seven goals in 17 appearances across all competitions. His availability will be a welcome option for the new coaching setup.
However, his return may come slightly too late for United's FA Cup clash with Brighton this Sunday. There is growing hope within the club that the 25-year-old could be ready for selection in time for next weekend's crucial Manchester derby.
Cameroon Coach Praises Young Squad
Cameroon head coach David Pagou echoed Mbeumo's mixed sentiments, expressing pride in his players' efforts. "I am proud of my players. We competed well against Morocco and we leave the tournament with our heads held high," Pagou said.
He emphasised the learning experience for his squad, many of whom were experiencing continental competition for the first time. "We have a young and new squad... There is a bright future for our young players," the coach concluded, suggesting the nation's exit came with valuable lessons for the future.
All eyes at Old Trafford will now be on integrating Bryan Mbeumo back into the fold as Manchester United look to stabilise their season under new leadership.
