Rory McIlroy is set to host the prestigious Masters Champions Dinner ahead of the 2026 tournament at Augusta National, marking his first time as defending champion. In a unique twist, he will not be seated next to any of his top rivals, including Scottie Scheffler or Jordan Spieth, during the exclusive gathering.
A Historic Moment for McIlroy
Twelve months ago, Rory McIlroy ended his long and arduous quest for a Masters title. After a tense playoff against Justin Rose, the Northern Irishman sank to his knees upon making the winning putt, securing not only his first green jacket but also achieving a historic Career Grand Slam. This week, McIlroy returns to Augusta National as the reigning champion, but before any competitive shots are played, he must uphold one of the tournament's most cherished traditions: hosting the Champions Dinner.
The Exclusive Gathering
The dinner, held annually on the Tuesday before the Masters, is reserved solely for past winners of the event. As the defending champion, McIlroy takes centre stage, presiding over the evening and personally curating the menu for a room filled with golfing legends. The event occurs on the second floor of the Augusta National clubhouse, where around 30 Masters champions are expected to attend, including six-time winner Jack Nicklaus and 90-year-old three-time champion Gary Player.
Notably, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson will be absent this year. Woods remains sidelined following a car crash last month, while Mickelson is missing due to a family-related health issue. McIlroy expressed regret over their absence, stating, "Unfortunately, there'll be a couple of guys that won't be in that room, which is a shame. I want to make sure that they're acknowledged as well—they've been two of the greatest champions that the Masters has ever seen."
Seating Protocol and Rivalries
One fascinating aspect of the dinner is the absence of a formal seating plan, with one exception: McIlroy's place. He will sit at the head of the table, flanked by the dinner's long-standing MC, two-time champion Ben Crenshaw, and Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley. This arrangement ensures McIlroy avoids sitting next to rivals like Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, or Jon Rahm—players who will be competing fiercely for his title over the weekend.
Despite the lack of a set plan, many attendees adhere to unspoken routines. Adam Scott, the 2013 champion, revealed in 2023, "A lot of people sit in the same chairs. I like that, to be perfectly honest. I like the fact that you kind of feel like that's your spot." Two-time winner Scottie Scheffler also highlighted the informal etiquette, noting, "There's a little protocol. I'm definitely not going to go sit in the area where Tiger [Woods] and Jack [Nicklaus] sit. Like, there's kind of spots where you kind of feel you'll naturally flow into."
McIlroy's Reflections and Menu
Ahead of the dinner, McIlroy shared his gratitude, saying, "I feel incredibly grateful to finally take part. I want to share that with everyone in the room. It is the most exclusive dinner club in all of sport, and I think we should all feel very fortunate that we are there. We're there because of the hard work and the good play that we've been able to produce."
For the menu, McIlroy has chosen an indulgent spread. Starters include peach and ricotta flatbread, rock shrimp tempura, bacon-wrapped dates, and grilled elk sliders. This is followed by a yellowfin tuna carpaccio, with main course options of Wagyu filet mignon or seared salmon. Dessert features a classic sticky toffee pudding, adding a sweet touch to the celebratory evening.
The Masters Champions Dinner remains a highlight of the tournament week, blending tradition with camaraderie among golf's elite. As McIlroy steps into this role, his careful seating and menu choices reflect both respect for the event's history and the competitive dynamics at play.
