McIlroy to Honour Tiger Woods at Masters Dinner Amid DUI

Rory McIlroy has announced his intention to honour the absent Tiger Woods during the prestigious Masters Champions Dinner this Tuesday. As the reigning champion, McIlroy will host the annual event at Augusta National, but Woods will not be in attendance following his recent arrest for driving under the influence.

Woods' Arrest and Absence from the Masters

Tiger Woods, aged 50, was arrested last month after a rollover car crash in Florida. Police discovered two opioid painkillers in his pocket during the incident. The golf legend pleaded not guilty to the DUI charge and has since been granted permission to seek treatment outside the United States. This development means Woods will miss the Masters, including the Champions Dinner hosted by McIlroy.

McIlroy's Plans for the Dinner

Speaking at Monday's Drive, Chip and Putt event, McIlroy confirmed that he will acknowledge both Woods and Phil Mickelson, who will also be absent due to a family health matter. "Unfortunately, there will be a couple of guys that won't be in that room, which is a shame," McIlroy explained. "But I want to make sure that they're acknowledged as well. They've been two of the greatest champions that the Masters has ever seen."

McIlroy expressed his excitement for the evening, stating, "It's going to be a really cool night. I can't wait. I hope everyone enjoys the dinner and enjoys everything that I've selected."

Woods' Statement and Recovery Efforts

In body camera footage from his arrest, Woods told Martin County police officers that he was "hoping" to play in the Masters, adding, "It depends on y'all." However, having struggled with multiple injury setbacks, Woods has played competitive golf only once in the past 21 months, just days before his arrest.

After being released on bail, Woods issued a statement: "I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today. I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritise my well-being and work toward lasting recovery. I'm committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time."

Support from the PGA Tour

Brian Rolapp, CEO of the PGA Tour, also released a statement in support of Woods. "Tiger Woods is one of the most influential figures the sports world has ever known," Rolapp said. "Over the last year, I have come to deeply appreciate Tiger not only for his impact on the game, but for his friendship and the perspective he has shared with me as I joined the golf industry. My thoughts are with him and his family as he takes this step, for which he has my full respect and support."

Upcoming Masters Tournament

The 2026 Masters is set to begin on Thursday, with play starting after 2pm UK time. Despite the absence of Woods and Mickelson, the event promises to be a highlight of the golfing calendar, with McIlroy's dinner serving as a poignant tribute to the missing champions.
