Ex-Referee: Arsenal's Merino Should Have Seen Red in 4-1 Villa Win
Merino Red Card Controversy Mars Arsenal's Villa Victory

Arsenal's emphatic 4-1 victory over title rivals Aston Villa on Tuesday night has been clouded by a significant refereeing controversy, with a former Premier League official stating Gunners midfielder Mikel Merino should have been sent off.

Controversial Moment Could Have Changed the Game

The pivotal incident occurred around the hour mark at the Emirates Stadium, with Arsenal leading 2-0 thanks to second-half goals from Gabriel Magalhaes and Martin Zubimendi. As Villa's Morgan Rogers threatened to break through, Merino was adjudged to have hauled him back by his shirt, conceding a foul.

Villa players immediately protested that it should have been the Spaniard's second yellow card, having already been cautioned for a foul on Amadou Onana just before half-time. Referee John Brooks, however, opted only to award the free-kick, allowing Merino to remain on the pitch.

Expert Verdict from Former Premier League Referee

The decision has since been scrutinised by ex-Premier League referee Mark Halsey. Asked for his analysis on the social media platform X, Halsey was unequivocal in his assessment.

"Hi Mark, this was a deliberate holding offence by Merino on Rogers that should have resulted in a 2nd yellow for denying a promising attack," Halsey stated.

When questioned whether a player's existing booking influences a referee's decision, Halsey clarified that each challenge should be judged on its own merits. He added, "IMO there are far too many yellows shown unnecessarily... the holding offence by Merino was a nailed on 2nd yellow."

Arteta's Tactical Move Seals Crucial Victory

Recognising the danger, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta swiftly substituted Merino to prevent a potential sending-off that could have allowed Villa back into the match. The tactical switch proved effective as Arsenal extended their lead.

Further goals from Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Jesus sealed a comprehensive 4-1 win, with Ollie Watkins netting a late consolation for the visitors in stoppage time.

The result was a significant one in the title race, moving Arsenal six points clear of Villa and piling pressure on other contenders like Manchester City.

Arteta's Jubilant Reaction

Speaking after the match, a delighted Arteta praised his team's performance against a high-quality opponent. "I'm so happy. We play every three days, we played an opponent that comes from 11 wins in a row. A superb team, very difficult to play against," he said.

He highlighted his team's efficiency, stating, "Unlike the last few games where we had so many big situations, today we were very prolific and accurate to make the difference."

While the three points were ultimately secured in convincing fashion, the debate surrounding Merino's let-off will linger as a key talking point from a night that could have unfolded very differently for the Premier League leaders.
