Miami Hurricanes Forward Faces Season-Ending Health Battle

The University of Miami's men's basketball programme has been rocked by the news that sophomore forward Marcus Allen has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The announcement was made by the school on Friday 19 December 2025, confirming the player will miss the remainder of the current season.

Diagnosis and Immediate Response

The diagnosis for the 6'7" forward came following routine medical tests, as confirmed in statements from both the Hurricanes and Allen's family. A Miami native, Allen began his college career at Missouri before transferring to join his hometown team this year. In the current season, he has been a valuable contributor off the bench, averaging 5.3 points and 3.1 rebounds in 18.9 minutes per game.

Allen has already commenced chemotherapy treatments as he begins his fight against the disease. Miami coach Jai Lucas led the tributes, praising Allen's character. "Marcus is an incredible person and teammate, and we will do everything we can to support him and his amazing family during this difficult time," Lucas said. He added that the toughness Allen shows on the court will be crucial in his recovery.

A Promising Career on Hold

The diagnosis puts a pause on what has been a highly promising basketball career. Allen was a consensus four-star recruit coming out of high school, where he led Miami Norland High to a state championship in 2024. His stellar senior year saw him average 22.7 points and 13.2 rebounds per game.

His talents earned him selection for the prestigious Allen Iverson Classic All-American game. Prior to that, he helped AZ Compass Prep reach the title game at the GEICO nationals in 2023, showcasing his ability on a national stage.

Family's Statement of Faith

In a moving statement, Allen's family expressed gratitude for the support they have received and emphasised their faith. "We want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers during an extremely difficult time for our family," the statement read. "We thank God for his continued Grace, Mercy and Favor. We wait in anticipation for the miracle healing to take place. We are standing on FAITH."

The entire Hurricanes programme has pledged its full support to Allen as he focuses entirely on his health and recovery. His absence will be felt on the court, but the team's priority is now his wellbeing.
