MLS Chief Makes Mo Salah Transfer Statement After Liverpool Exit Confirmed
Mohamed Salah is set to depart Liverpool at the end of the season, concluding a glittering career at Anfield, with attention now shifting to his potential next club following the official confirmation of his exit.
New York City's Interest in Salah
Brad Sims, the CEO of New York City, has publicly expressed that the club would 'love' to sign Mohamed Salah once he leaves Liverpool. The Egyptian forward, aged 33, confirmed his departure in an emotional video message to supporters, with the remainder of his contract due to be cancelled.
Speaking at the Sports Business Journal Business of Soccer conference, Sims clarified the situation, stating, 'I would love to have Mo Salah. We have not had any discussions with him or his people. What is most important is does the player want to come to MLS and be in New York City.'
He emphasised the club's approach to signings, noting, 'We are not going to go out and sell someone on New York, the league or our club. We want players who really want to be here.' Sims also highlighted the importance of character in potential recruits, adding, 'You need the guys who are going to be the hardest trainers, good team mates and good for the locker room and the culture. We do a lot of due diligence, and not just on star players.'
Salah's Farewell and Future Uncertainty
In his announcement, Salah reflected on his time at Liverpool, saying, 'Hello everyone. Unfortunately, the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell: I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.' He expressed deep gratitude, noting, 'I wanted to start by saying that I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people, would become part of my life. Liverpool, it's not just a football club. It's a passion. It's a history. It's a spirit.'
Salah has a minimum of ten games remaining as a Liverpool player before his departure. While Saudi Arabia remains a rumoured option, his agent, Ramy Abass, has confirmed that no decision has been made, stating, 'We do not know where Mohamed will play next season. This also means that no one else knows.'
As the transfer speculation continues, New York City's interest adds a new dimension to the ongoing discussions about Salah's next career move, though any potential deal remains in the early stages without formal talks.
