Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua found himself at the centre of a major controversy this week, only to then deliver a crucial touchdown on the field during Thursday Night Football.
From Livestream Scandal to Touchdown Apology
The 24-year-old NFL star sparked widespread fury after appearing on a live stream hosted by Adin Ross and N3on. During the broadcast, Nacua devised a touchdown celebration that incorporated an offensive Jewish stereotype. The incident drew immediate condemnation, prompting the player and the league itself to issue statements.
Nacua later posted a grovelling apology on social media, stating he was unaware of the antisemitic nature of the suggested movement. "I deeply apologize to anyone who was offended by my actions as I do not stand for any form of racism, bigotry or hate of another group of people," he wrote. The NFL also released a statement condemning his behaviour.
A Simple Celebration Under the Spotlight
All eyes were on Nacua when he scored a second-half touchdown to extend the Rams' lead over the Seattle Seahawks in a pivotal moment for the 2025 season. After crossing into the end zone, the receiver wisely opted for a subdued celebration, spinning the ball and spreading his arms wide in a simple, breaststroke-like motion. This was a stark contrast to the controversial dance planned earlier in the week.
However, the offensive celebration was not the only contentious remark Nacua made on the now-notorious Kick livestream. He also risked further wrath from the NFL by criticising the league's part-time officials. "The refs are the worst," Nacua alleged. "These guys are lawyers. They want to be on TV, too." He suggested they make incorrect calls deliberately to gain television exposure.
Family Troubles and Unclear Consequences
It has been a difficult week for the Nacua family beyond the football field. Puka's brother, Samson Nacua, 27, was arrested on Wednesday alongside Trey Rose, also 27. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, they were arrested for their alleged role in stealing an SUV belonging to LA Lakers basketball player Adou Thiero over the weekend.
As for Puka Nacua, it remains unclear whether the NFL will take disciplinary action against him for his comments about the referees or for the antisemitic dance proposal. For now, his focus will be on the Rams' season, but the fallout from this week's events is likely to continue.
