The National Basketball Association has handed down a three-game suspension without pay to Sacramento Kings guard Dennis Schroder following an off-court altercation with Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic.
The Incident: A Post-Game Confrontation
According to an official NBA statement released on Saturday, the confrontation occurred approximately 40 minutes after the Kings' 125-101 loss to the LA Lakers at Crypto.com Arena on December 28. While the league's announcement did not name the other player involved, insider reports from Chris Haynes confirmed the individual was Luka Doncic, whom Schroder sought out in a hallway.
The NBA cited Schroder for "confronting and attempting to strike another player." This incident, happening just three days after Christmas, extended the competitive tension from the court into the arena's private areas long after the final buzzer had sounded.
Immediate Consequences and Suspension Schedule
The suspension is effective immediately. Schroder will begin serving his ban when the Kings host the Houston Rockets at the Golden 1 Center on Sunday. He will be eligible to return to action on January 16.
Significantly, the ban includes a game against Doncic's Mavericks on Monday, effectively removing any immediate risk of further escalation or on-court aggravation between the two players when their teams next meet.
Schroder's Journeyman Career
The 32-year-old German point guard, a first-round pick (No. 17 overall) in the 2013 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks, is now with his tenth team in twelve seasons. His career path has included stints with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, Houston Rockets, Toronto Raptors, Brooklyn Nets, Golden State Warriors, and Detroit Pistons.
Schroder landed with the Sacramento Kings last July via a sign-and-trade deal. To date, the experienced journeyman has appeared in 842 regular-season games throughout his well-travelled career.
