Crystal Palace Triumph in Cyprus to Secure European Quarter-Final Spot
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has praised his team's "huge achievement" after they secured a dramatic 2-1 extra-time victory over AEK Larnaca in Cyprus on Thursday evening. The win propels the Eagles into the UEFA Conference League quarter-finals, where they will face Italian side Fiorentina.
Match Highlights and Key Moments
The match, which followed a goalless first leg at Selhurst Park, saw Palace take an early lead through Ismaila Sarr in the 13th minute. However, AEK Larnaca defender Enric Saborit equalised in the 63rd minute, only to be sent off ten minutes later after receiving a second yellow card.
With the score locked at 1-1 after ninety minutes, the game went into extra time. Sarr once again proved decisive, scoring his second goal of the night just nine minutes into the additional period to put Palace 2-1 ahead. The Senegalese forward then came agonisingly close to completing a hat-trick, hitting the crossbar on two separate occasions.
The home side's task was made even more difficult when Petros Ioannou was dismissed, reducing AEK Larnaca to nine men for the final stages of the match. Palace held on to secure their place in the last eight of the competition.
Manager's Reaction and Looking Ahead
Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Glasner expressed his delight at the team's progression. "It's a huge achievement," the Austrian manager stated. "We are looking forward and it is now to really make the best with the three weeks, because our next competitive game is against Fiorentina at Selhurst Park."
Glasner outlined the team's plans during the upcoming international break, noting that many players will join their national teams. "We will have a few days off and then many of our players go to their national team and then we will prepare," he explained. "We will play a friendly to stay in the rhythm. It's good. I expect (forward) Eddie Nketiah back, so everybody will help us, because then it will be a very tight schedule until the end of the season, and hopefully our European journey continues."
The victory marks another significant milestone in Crystal Palace's European campaign, building on their impressive performances throughout the tournament. The quarter-final tie against Fiorentina promises to be a challenging but exciting encounter for the South London club.
