Drake Maye Misses Patriots Practice Due to Illness Ahead of Super Bowl
Patriots QB Drake Maye Misses Practice with Illness

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye was absent from Friday's practice session after falling ill, marking the latest disruption in the team's preparations for the upcoming Super Bowl clash with the Seattle Seahawks.

Coach Vrabel Confirms Absence

Head coach Mike Vrabel confirmed that Maye did not participate in the practice, noting that the quarterback was not seen during the limited portion of workouts open to media observers. This development follows Maye's limited involvement in Thursday's practice due to a shoulder injury, with Vrabel stating that both the illness and the injury kept him off the field on Friday.

Maye Remains Engaged Off the Field

Despite missing the practice, Maye was present at the team facility and actively took part in team meetings. Vrabel reported that Maye responded "favorable" after Thursday's session, where he engaged in some throwing exercises, and would have practiced on Friday if not for the illness.

Vrabel expressed no concern over Maye's availability for future activities, highlighting that illnesses have been common among players in recent weeks. "We've had a lot of guys over the last month or six weeks with illness," Vrabel said. "Again, trying to do what's best for the player and the team. And try to take care of guys (and) don't spread things. But we've worked with this here for the past six weeks."

Final Practice Before Super Bowl Week

Friday's practice was the Patriots' last session in Massachusetts before the team travels to Santa Clara, California, to commence Super Bowl week. Maye had previously emphasised his commitment to being ready for the big game, stating on Thursday, "I'm feeling good and looking forward to being ready to go. This is the game you dream of playing, so looking forward to getting out there and playing in the Super Bowl."

The Patriots are now focusing on ensuring Maye's recovery as they finalise their strategies for the highly anticipated Super Bowl matchup.
