Paul Nicholson Retires Mid-Match: Ex-PDC Champion Ends Playing Career
Paul Nicholson announces retirement from darts

In a stunning on-air revelation, former PDC Tour champion Paul Nicholson has confirmed his retirement from professional darts. The 46-year-old, known as 'The Asset', made the announcement unexpectedly while providing live commentary for a darts event.

A Surprise Announcement Behind the Mic

Paul Nicholson chose the commentary box to declare his playing career over, stating he had never said the words out loud until that moment. The Newcastle-born star was covering a Seniors Showdown match between Johnny Haines and Terry Jenkins in the MODUS Super Series when he shared his decision with viewers.

"I can actually tell you, at this point in time, I've never said this out loud until now, I am retired," Nicholson disclosed. "I have decided to not play darts anymore. That is something I've said to myself over the new year. I am 100 per cent media now."

Peak Years and Memorable Rivalries

Nicholson's pinnacle came around 2010 when he captured his sole televised title at the Players Championship. His career highlights include reaching the final of the 2011 Championship League and finishing as runner-up at the 2012 World Cup of Darts for his adopted country, Australia.

He was also known for his flamboyant stage entrances and a notable, short-lived rivalry with darts legend Phil 'The Power' Taylor. Their feud included several heated confrontations and verbal sparring through the press. Nicholson memorably beat Taylor to reach the 2011 UK Open quarter-finals, famously gesturing him off stage, a move Taylor later called "very, very silly."

The Path to Retirement

While the news may not shock close followers of the sport, it formally ends years of speculation. Nicholson has not featured on the PDC circuit since 2019, when he opted to skip Q School to work on his game. A comeback never materialised, and his absence from the elite level had been prolonged.

The former World Championship quarter-finalist will now focus fully on his media career, aiming to channel his natural flair for theatrics into commentary and analysis. Despite his retirement from the oche, fans will continue to hear his distinctive voice and insights from behind the scenes.
