Premier League clubs are set to vote on a significant expansion of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) powers that could see the technology used to review corner kick decisions from the start of next season. This follows the International Football Association Board (IFAB), football's global law-making body, granting competitions the option to implement such checks, provided they do not cause delays in play.
World Cup Implementation and Premier League Decision
The proposed VAR expansion for corners will be showcased at this summer's World Cup in North America, serving as a trial run for potential adoption in domestic leagues. However, the Premier League must independently decide whether to introduce this change for its 2026-27 campaign.
At a recent meeting, Premier League director of football Tony Scholes briefed clubs on the law changes approved by IFAB. The Press Association reports that a formal survey will be distributed to clubs to gather their views on implementing VAR for corner decisions.
UEFA's Push for VAR Consistency Across Europe
Meanwhile, UEFA is planning to convene the Premier League and other top European divisions this summer to establish greater alignment on VAR protocols. There is a strong determination within European football's governing body to create a unified interpretation of VAR rules, with discussions scheduled after the World Cup.
UEFA's referees chief Roberto Rosetti expressed concern last month that VAR was drifting from its original purpose of correcting clear and obvious errors, becoming excessively "microscopic" in its interventions. "We love football like it is," Rosetti stated during a briefing in Brussels, emphasizing the need for Europe to "speak only one technical language" regarding VAR implementation.
Current VAR Statistics and Comparative Analysis
As of February 13, the Premier League has maintained a lower frequency of on-field VAR reviews compared to the Champions League, with an average of 0.15 reviews per game versus 0.36 in Europe's premier club competition. This statistic highlights existing differences in how VAR is applied across competitions.
The potential expansion to include corner decisions represents one of the most significant proposed changes to VAR's remit since its introduction. Currently, VAR in the Premier League does not review corner kick awards, focusing instead on goals, penalties, red cards, and cases of mistaken identity.
Technical Considerations and Implementation Challenges
IFAB's approval comes with the crucial stipulation that any VAR review of corners must not delay the taking of the kick. This requirement presents technical and procedural challenges that leagues must address if they choose to implement the change.
The debate over VAR's role continues to evolve, with Rosetti's comments reflecting broader concerns about maintaining football's flow while ensuring fair decision-making. The Premier League's vote will therefore carry significant implications for how technology shapes the game's future in England and potentially across Europe.
