Rio Ferdinand has publicly urged Manchester United to secure four new signings during the upcoming summer transfer window, emphasising that midfield reinforcements should be the club's primary focus. The former United defender believes this targeted approach is realistic and necessary for the team's progression.
Midfield Takes Priority for United
Ferdinand insists that bolstering the midfield is crucial, with two central midfielders on his wishlist. He suggests one should be a starter, while the other could be a younger player to develop alongside existing talents like Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo. This comes as United confirmed Casemiro's departure upon contract expiry, with Manuel Ugarte also potentially moving on.
Striker and Full-Back Also Needed
In addition to midfielders, Ferdinand advocates for signing a younger forward to serve as a backup option and a full-back to strengthen the defensive line. He stated on his podcast that these four signings would constitute a successful transfer window without requiring a massive overhaul of the squad.
Ferdinand explained: "If United go and get four players in the next window and two of those are starters, then I think that's a realistic transfer window. I would also go for another forward, a younger one who is going to be more of a back-up to what we've already got. And I would go for a full-back. That's it. I don't think you need a huge revamp."
Recent Transfer History and Targets
United's recent signings include Benjamin Sesko, who cost over £70 million and has improved after a slow start, contrasting with past struggles like Rasmus Hojlund's unsuccessful stint. Ferdinand highlighted potential targets, noting Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest as a standout candidate due to his all-action style and character.
He mentioned: "Elliot Anderson seems to be ticking those boxes. I think he's a wonderful player and the right type not only of player but character." Other names like Carlos Baleba, Sandro Tonali, and Bruno Guimaraes were also referenced, though Ferdinand withheld some targets to avoid alerting rival clubs.
Context and Future Prospects
This advice comes as United are poised for a return to the Champions League, underscoring the need for strategic investments. Ferdinand's call reflects a belief in incremental improvement rather than sweeping changes, aiming to build a competitive squad for the upcoming season.
