Aston Villa surged into the Christmas period as genuine Premier League title contenders after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Manchester United at Villa Park, their tenth consecutive win in all competitions. The hero of the hour was once again Morgan Rogers, whose brilliant brace secured a seventh straight league triumph and closed the gap to leaders Arsenal to just three points.

The match exploded into life just before half-time. In the 45th minute, Rogers displayed incredible skill to keep a John McGinn pass in play, cut in from the left flank, and, afforded space by defender Leny Yoro, curled a beautiful strike into the net from the corner of the box. United, however, struck back in stoppage time. Under pressure from Patrick Dorgu, Matty Cash was dispossessed, allowing Dorgu to prod the ball to Matheus Cunha, who slammed home from an acute angle to level the scores.
The second half saw Villa regain control. In the 57th minute, Rogers was the beneficiary of a cleared Youri Tielemans cross, hammering the loose ball past the United defence to restore Villa's lead and send the Holte End into raptures. United's efforts to find another equaliser were hampered by a significant blow suffered just before the break, as captain Bruno Fernandes was forced off at half-time with an apparent hamstring injury.
Injury Woes Compound United's Defeat
Manchester United's task was already difficult, missing seven first-team players through injury and illness. Their problems deepened when Fernandes pulled up, with natural midfield replacement Kobbie Mainoo also absent due to a calf issue. Lisandro Martinez was deployed in an unfamiliar holding role after the interval. Despite late pressure, with Diogo Dalot denied by Emiliano Martinez and Cunha heading just wide, United could not find a way through a resilient Villa defence.
The occasion also saw debuts for United youngsters Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey, but it was Villa's day. The win, masterminded by Unai Emery, solidifies their remarkable form and places them firmly in the championship conversation as the season reaches its midway point.
