Rooney Warns City Over 'Over the Top' Celebrations After Arsenal Victory

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has issued a stern warning to Manchester City, criticising their exuberant celebrations following a dramatic 2-1 victory over Arsenal on Sunday. The former England striker described the post-match scenes as "a bit over the top" and suggested they might prove premature in the tense Premier League title race.

City's Crucial Victory at the Etihad

The match at the Etihad Stadium saw Manchester City come from behind to secure a vital three points against their title rivals. Rayan Cherki gave City the lead in the first half, only for Kai Havertz to equalise for Arsenal just two minutes later, capitalising on a rare mistake from goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

After a tense first period, City dominated after the break, with Erling Haaland restoring their advantage in the 65th minute. Arsenal had a late opportunity to level through Havertz, but the chance went begging, leaving City to celebrate a victory that reduces Arsenal's lead at the top of the table to just three points.

Unrestrained Celebrations Draw Criticism

At the final whistle, City's celebrations were unrestrained. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma jumped into the crowd, while supporters unveiled a banner reading 'Panic on the streets of London'. The players then completed their customary lap of honour – a new initiative for this season.

Speaking on Match of the Day, Rooney expressed his concerns about the celebrations. "(The celebrations) were a bit over the top," he said. "It's six games to go for City, it's obviously a big win. I also think for Arsenal, they need to pick themselves up from that."

When asked by host Mark Chapman whether Arsenal might use City's celebrations as motivation for their remaining fixtures, Rooney responded: "I just think it's a little bit premature and it might come back to bite them."

Title Race Analysis and Predictions

Rooney, who admitted he "does not want" his old rivals Manchester City to win the league, provided a detailed analysis of the remaining fixtures. "I think it will be tight," he added. "I think they are good fixtures for Arsenal and they will win all of their games. I think City's fixtures are a little bit more difficult and I think Everton might take a couple of points off them."

His assessment aligns with statistical models from Opta, which predict Arsenal still have a 69 per cent chance of winning the league despite their defeat. City's chances have risen to 31 per cent, reflecting the model's view that their remaining fixtures are tougher than Arsenal's.

Remaining Fixtures for Both Sides

Arsenal's run-in:

  • Home to Newcastle United
  • Home to Fulham
  • Away to West Ham United
  • Home to Burnley
  • Away to Crystal Palace

Manchester City's run-in:

  • Away to Burnley
  • Away to Everton
  • Home to Brentford
  • Away to Bournemouth
  • Home to Aston Villa
  • Game in hand against Crystal Palace (date to be confirmed)

Rooney's Message to Arsenal Supporters

The former Manchester United forward also had a message for Arsenal fans, urging them to support their team through the final stages of the season. "The (Arsenal) fans have got a big role to play," Rooney insisted. "In the last game against Bournemouth they were booing their players off the pitch. They've been top of the league all season."

He continued: "I want Arsenal to win the league. I don't want Man City to win the league. The Arsenal fans need to get behind their team and the importance of that is massive. The players will be nervous as well, they have got to show the players that they're with them, give them their full support."

Arsenal will be desperate to avoid a fourth successive runners-up finish, having been pipped to the title by City in two of the last three seasons. With five games remaining for Arsenal and six for City (including a game in hand), the title race promises to go down to the wire, with Rooney's warning adding another layer of intrigue to the final weeks of the campaign.
