The expert analysis provides a fascinating counterpoint to the emotional verdict of supporters. In a separate survey of 2,000 fans conducted by OnePoll.com, David Beckham's famous halfway-line strike for Manchester United against Wimbledon in 1996 claimed top spot.
Rooney's overhead kick secured second place in the fans' poll, with Cristiano Ronaldo's long-range free-kick against Portsmouth in 2008 completing their top three.
