Teddy Sheringham believes Morgan Gibbs-White would be the ideal replacement for Bruno Fernandes if he leaves Manchester United. The future of United captain Fernandes remains unclear ahead of next season. Fernandes rejected offers from the Saudi Pro League last summer in favour of remaining at Old Trafford. But the Portuguese international is expected to be inundated with more offers again during the close season. United bosses are coming under huge pressure to hand the midfielder a new and improved deal.
And if Fernandes does end up leaving United, former Old Trafford favourite Sheringham reckons England and Nottingham Forest star Gibbs-White would be the man to fill his boots. Sheringham told Oddschecker: "I would probably say Morgan Gibbs-White. I think Tottenham could have done with getting him when they tried at the end of last season."
"I was quite excited about that prospect at the time for Tottenham. I think he's one that plays with real grit and that he wants to show people what he can do on the pitch. He's also got a very good engine. I think his desire is there for all to see, to become a better player, and I think he would be at a bigger club. He would fit in nicely alongside the United players there."
Sheringham, meanwhile, who helped United win the Champions League treble in 1999, wants his former club to make Michael Carrick the permanent manager. He added: "I'd be delighted with Michael Carrick. He's been a revelation since he's gone in there. I think the talk of him being the same as Ole is a load of rubbish! I see no one else in the picture for Manchester United to bring in, to be honest."
"He's got the club into a very, very good position now, after where they were when he arrived, and the way they're playing has been fantastic."
