Nicky Henderson Mourns Loss of Champion Horse Sir Gino After Infection Battle
Sir Gino: Champion Horse Dies After Severe Infection Battle

Renowned trainer Nicky Henderson has announced the tragic death of his exceptional racehorse Sir Gino, following an unsuccessful battle against severe deep-seated infections. The six-year-old gelding, who was a leading contender for the prestigious Champion Hurdle, had to be euthanised at a veterinary hospital on Tuesday morning.

A Devastating Loss for the Racing Community

Henderson shared the heartbreaking news via a social media post, expressing profound sorrow over the loss of what he described as "not only brilliant but one of the nicest kindest horses you could ever wish to see." The trainer emphasised that Sir Gino's passing has created "an awful hole" at the Seven Barrows stable, marking a particularly cruel blow for owners Joe and Marie Donnelly.

Remarkable Career Cut Short

Sir Gino enjoyed an impeccable racing record, remaining unbeaten in his seven completed starts. His achievements included three Grade One victories over hurdles and an impressive performance in a Grade Two Chase during his sole appearance over fences. Most notably, the horse demonstrated extraordinary resilience last year when he overcame similar infections to triumph in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton Park on Boxing Day.

Henderson reflected on Sir Gino's legacy, stating: "We would have to say that he was just at least as good as any of all the amazing horses we have been lucky enough to have trained. Unforgettable in every way."

Injury Complications and Final Battle

The promising hurdler's career was interrupted in January when he sustained a fractured pelvis during Cheltenham's Trials Day, forcing jockey Nico de Boinville to pull him up from the race. While the pelvic injury was reportedly healing well, the horse faced a more formidable challenge from infections that had spread too extensively to overcome.

Henderson explained in his tribute: "He has been fighting from severe deep-seated infections that he had overcome last year prior to his brilliant return in the Christmas Hurdle but this time it had spread too far although his fractured pelvis was healing well."

Widespread Mourning in Racing Circles

The news has sent shockwaves through the horse racing community, where Sir Gino was widely regarded as one of the most exciting prospects in National Hunt racing. His untimely death at such a young age, with what appeared to be a glittering future ahead, has been described as particularly devastating for all connected with the sport.

Henderson paid special tribute to the Donnellys, noting their deep care for their horses over many years and the particular cruelty of losing "such a young star with his life in front of him." The trainer, jockey De Boinville, and the entire Seven Barrows team had maintained hope for Sir Gino's recovery and return to training following his January injury.

The racing world now mourns the loss of a genuine talent whose brief but spectacular career left an indelible mark on the sport, remembered for both his competitive brilliance and his gentle nature in the stable.
