Liverpool manager Arne Slot has issued a stark warning to his players ahead of their crucial Champions League quarter-final first leg against Paris St Germain on Wednesday evening. The Dutch coach admitted that if his side's performance drops to the levels seen in their humiliating 4-0 FA Cup defeat to Manchester City, they will suffer another heavy defeat in Paris.
Manchester City Humiliation Still Fresh
The Reds' difficult second season under Slot hit a new low on Saturday lunchtime as reigning Premier League champions Manchester City demolished them 4-0 in an FA Cup quarter-final at the Etihad Stadium. Liverpool collapsed either side of half-time in what Slot described as an embarrassing last-eight loss that has increased pressure on the team.
Captain Virgil van Dijk delivered scathing criticism after the match, accusing teammates of giving up and apologising to fans for the performance. Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard called Van Dijk's remarks "alarming" and described these as "worrying times" for the club.
Slot Responds to Captain's Criticism
When asked about Van Dijk's comments, Slot offered a measured response. "I didn't see players giving up in that part of the game," the Liverpool manager stated. "But I think it's also good from a captain that he has a strong and firm reaction after a game like that and hopefully it's not only immediately after the game, but we can, as a team, show a strong and firm reaction tomorrow evening."
The Dutchman emphasised the need for consistency throughout the entire match against PSG. "It is a challenge for us to be from the first to the last second at the level we were at in the first 35 minutes at City," Slot explained. "If not, it's going to be a really hard night again, like it was last year where we completely deserved to lose 4-0 over here or maybe more."
PSG Threat Looms Large
Slot was brutally honest about what would happen if Liverpool repeat their Manchester City performance against the French champions. "I can tell you, if we have the 20 minutes we had at City, if we have them tomorrow evening here, we will again concede four goals because these players over here know how to act if we are having 20 minutes like that," he warned.
The Liverpool manager referenced last season's encounter at the Parc des Princes, where the Reds secured a 1-0 smash-and-grab victory in the last-16 first leg despite being thoroughly outplayed. "That's the beauty of football," Slot reflected. "In the 85th minute we scored a goal and it was almost like this was a robbery."
On that occasion, goalkeeper Alisson Becker produced an inspired display to save his side, but the Brazilian shot-stopper is injured for Wednesday's crucial quarter-final first leg, adding to Liverpool's defensive concerns.
Isak Returns to Boost Attack
Liverpool receive some positive news with striker Alexander Isak returning to the squad after 15 weeks on the sidelines with an ankle injury. The 26-year-old Sweden international suffered a fibula fracture during a tackle by Micky van de Ven when scoring the opening goal in Liverpool's 2-1 win against Tottenham in December.
Isak has managed just 16 appearances since his £125million switch from Newcastle last summer, having struggled with fitness issues and minor injuries before the significant ankle problem. Slot confirmed the striker is part of the 21-man squad travelling to Paris but indicated he won't start the match.
"He's finished close to a week of team training sessions now, so he can play a part otherwise I wouldn't take him," Slot explained. "I decided not to take him to the Etihad because we felt, and talked with the player, medical, performance staff, that he wasn't able to get a performance out of him yet. Since he's with us now, we do think that we can get a performance out of him now, but not to start."
The return of Isak provides Liverpool with additional attacking options as they face the daunting challenge of containing PSG's formidable forward line while trying to secure a positive result ahead of the second leg at Anfield.
