Coronation Street fans have been left 'super emotional' after Carla Connor and Lisa Swain finally tied the knot in Thursday's episode, marking a historic first for the long-running soap.
A Landmark Wedding
The couple, who first got together in late 2024 and became a social media sensation known as Swarla, have endured numerous ups and downs. Their engagement was immediately blighted when Lisa's wife Becky, believed to have been killed in the line of duty in 2021, returned from the dead as part of a corrupt police cover-up. Becky's attempts to win Lisa back included kidnapping Underworld boss Carla and locking her in an airing cupboard before moving her to a shipping container. After a rescue mission that aired as part of a crossover with Emmerdale, Becky went to prison, allowing Lisa and Carla to rebuild their relationship.
Emotional Vows and Celebrations
In emotional scenes released early on ITVX, Carla and Lisa walked down the aisle with Roy Cropper, a father figure to Carla, and Lisa's daughter Betsy behind them. During her vows, Carla, who has been married five times before, kissed Lisa's hand and said: 'I love you. We're our own love story, aren't we? Our own little team and we're not just looking in each other's eyes, we're looking in the same direction. Standing side-by-side, forever. Please.' They kissed and were pronounced wife and wife as The Turtles' classic 'Happy Together' played. Both women have officially taken the name Connor-Swain. Carla's employees threw a surprise party at the factory to serve as the wedding reception.
A Soap First
This wedding is a major first for Coronation Street, which began in 1960, as no lesbian wedding has successfully taken place before. In 2011, Sophie Webster left Sian Powers at the altar, and in 2019, Rana Habeeb and Kate Connor were saying vows under rubble when Rana died. Fans immediately took to social media to react. One wrote: 'When Happy Together starts playing after Carla saying forever please, I feel like my hearts gonna launch out my body.' Another said: 'First and foremost congratulations lovebirds. No one can deny how powerful their bond truly is.' A third added: 'I thought it was so beautiful and meaningful for the street to organize the party. I'M SUPER EMOTIONAL.'
Impending Drama
However, the happiness was short-lived as a scream was heard just before the first dance. Carla dismissed it as 'just foxes,' but the programme is gearing up for a murder week where either Jodie Ramsey, Carl Webster, Theo Silverton, Megan Walsh, or Maggie Driscoll will be killed off amid villainous storylines. Coronation Street boss Kate Brooks said: 'It was a very complicated storylining process. I did lose a bit of sleep. Usually in a murder week you've got one victim, then the suspects – we had five potential suspects. It could be any of them.'
Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
