Malick Thiaw's Brace Powers Newcastle to First Away Win
Thiaw's double seals Newcastle's first away victory

Newcastle United secured their first Premier League away victory of the season in spectacular fashion, thanks to an unlikely goalscoring hero emerging from their defensive ranks.

Defender Turns Match-Winner

German centre-back Malick Thiaw, a £35million signing, scored twice in Newcastle's commanding performance against Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium. The 24-year-old, who had previously managed just one Bundesliga goal for Schalke 04 and one in Serie A for AC Milan, headed home a quickfire opener inside the first minute before adding a second powerful header later in the match.

Thiaw revealed his newfound prowess in front of goal came after seeking advice from teammates Nick Woltemade and Fabian Schar. "Yesterday, I spoke with Nick and Fabi about it - about how I had had opportunities to score," Thiaw explained. "I just maybe needed some better technique - more power maybe - and Nick and Fabi showed me … and it worked out."

Squad Depth Proves Decisive

The comprehensive victory lifted Newcastle above Everton on goal difference and showcased the strength of Eddie Howe's squad. The Newcastle manager demonstrated his side's impressive depth by bringing on high-quality substitutes including Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon, Fabian Schar, Jacob Ramsey and Joe Willock during the match.

"We have so many quality players. A good mix of young and experienced players," Thiaw said, praising the squad's composition. "The depth of the squad is amazing. You saw that today." This strength will be crucial as Newcastle balance their Premier League commitments with Champions League football.

Youth and Experience Combine

Another standout performer was 19-year-old midfielder Lewis Miley, who celebrated his first Premier League goal of the season in an accomplished display. The teenager expressed his pride at scoring for his boyhood club, noting: "It's a really proud moment for me every time I score for Newcastle because it is my boyhood club. And that second goal was really important because they had come into it after the first goal."

Thiaw, serenaded by travelling Newcastle supporters throughout the match, acknowledged the fans' warm reception since his arrival. "The Newcastle fans have welcomed me like it is my new home," he said, while emphasising his determination to remain grounded despite the memorable achievement of scoring two goals in a match for the first time since his youth football days at age 17.

The victory provides significant momentum for Eddie Howe's side, who had previously struggled away from home this season. Miley echoed this sentiment, stating: "It was a really positive performance from us. We have struggled away from home but that should kick us on now."
