Last-Minute Jockey Change for Grand National as Tom Bellamy Steps In

In a dramatic turn of events just before the prestigious Grand National, jockey Tom Bellamy has been handed a last-minute call-up to ride Marble Sands. This opportunity arose after Kielan Woods, the originally scheduled rider, was forced to withdraw due to a hip injury sustained in a fall at Fontwell on Wednesday.

From Disappointment to Opportunity

Bellamy, 31, had initially been booked to partner last year's Grand National winner, Nick Rockett, on Wednesday. The horse, who triumphed under amateur Patrick Mullins in 2025, was selected by trainer Willie Mullins, offering Bellamy what he described as a "pinch yourself moment" and one of his best chances to win the £1 million prize.

However, within 24 hours, Nick Rockett was ruled out of the big race, leaving Bellamy without a mount. His only hope for participation hinged on another rider's misfortune, which materialised when Woods' injury created an opening.

Injury Forces Withdrawal

Kielan Woods was taken to hospital after his fall and subsequently conceded he would not be fit to ride Marble Sands. His agent, Gordon Clarkson, confirmed the situation, stating, "Kielan was doing all he could to get back but he will be out for about four weeks. He'll know more when he has an MRI scan next week. It's a problem with his hip."

This paved the way for Bellamy to be announced as the replacement on Saturday, securing his spot in the high-stakes race.

Bellamy's Season and Grand National History

Tom Bellamy is enjoying his best season to date, with 64 wins, including a notable victory at Cheltenham this year on White Noise in the Dawn Run Mares' Novices' Hurdle. His success there brought him nationwide fame when his mother, Sue, humorously announced on ITV that he was "looking for a girlfriend," adding, "Anybody out there? He's a nice lad."

Despite this strong form, Bellamy has yet to complete the Grand National in his five previous attempts. His record includes four falls and one pulled-up ride, making this new opportunity with Marble Sands a chance to break that streak.

Surprise and Determination

Reflecting on his original selection for Nick Rockett, Bellamy expressed surprise, telling Mirror Racing, "I thought it must be a mistake to be honest with you! I didn't have a ride until now. The season has been brilliant and I suppose that's why this happened."

He added, "I was going well on Broadway Boy last year until he tipped up. This is a pinch yourself moment for me." Now, with Marble Sands, Bellamy aims to turn that moment into a successful finish in one of horse racing's most challenging events.
