In a move that left many viewers stunned, former US President Donald Trump was presented with FIFA's inaugural 'peace prize' during the 2026 World Cup draw ceremony in Washington DC.
The Controversial Award Presentation
The unexpected accolade was handed to Trump by FIFA President Giovanni Infantino at the Kennedy Center event on Friday night. Just weeks after being overlooked for the Nobel Peace Prize, the Republican leader was lavished with praise by the football chief, who declared, "You definitely deserve the first FIFA peace prize for your action."
The governing body had announced the new award in early November, reportedly without any public selection process or named candidates. Trump was also given a medal, which he wore for the remainder of the ceremony.
Trump's Speech and 'Millions of Lives' Claim
Accepting what he called "one of the great honours of my life," Trump delivered a speech filled with bold assertions. He claimed credit for saving "millions and millions of lives," citing conflicts in the Congo and between India and Pakistan as examples. "Some wars we've ended just before they started," he stated.
His address took on a tone reminiscent of an awards show acceptance, thanking his wife, Melania, and praising the working relationship with the leaders of Canada and Mexico, fellow co-hosts of the 2026 tournament. He concluded by asserting, "The world is a safer place now."
Body Language Expert's Analysis
Body language guru Judi James analysed Trump's demeanour for The Mirror, noting he adopted "the ultimate pose of the senior statesman" as Infantino praised him. James described his jaw as set firm and his arms straight, with a slight lean forward making the medal appear heavy.
"His tone when he does speak is a soft growl of seriousness," James observed, adding that his mannerisms mirrored those of an actor receiving an Oscar. The expert noted a shift when Trump mentioned Melania, throwing a hand towards her in the audience and lowering his eyes and microphone to allow for her applause—an act James interpreted as "humility and respect."
Trump also used the platform to wade into the long-standing naming debate in American sports, suggesting the United States should "come up with another name for the NFL stuff," arguing that soccer is the true football.
The relationship between Trump and Infantino has deepened since the joint North American bid won the right to host the 2026 World Cup. FIFA has previously stated their collaboration led to the formation of the White House Task Force for the tournament.
