England head coach Thomas Tuchel has declared that Arsenal defender Ben White fully deserves a second opportunity with the national team, while also emphasising that the returning player must clear the air with several of his teammates. White has been drafted into the 35-man squad as a replacement for the injured Jarell Quansah ahead of friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, marking his first call-up since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Controversial Departure and Return
The 28-year-old right-back was part of Sir Gareth Southgate's Euro 2020 squad and subsequently travelled to the World Cup, only to depart during the knockout phase due to what the Football Association described as personal reasons. Reports later surfaced of an alleged confrontation with assistant coach Steve Holland, allegations repeatedly denied by Southgate, who revealed in March 2024 that White had made himself unavailable for England selection.
Tuchel confirmed last year that White expressed a desire to return to the international fold. With Quansah's late injury, the Arsenal defender received his recall, reacting with what Tuchel described as euphoric and emotional positivity within seconds of the opportunity arising.
Tuchel's Support and Conditions
"First of all, I think everyone deserves a second chance," stated the England manager. "I don't know exactly what happened. I was also not 100 per cent interested in that because I wanted to open a new page and a new book and a new opportunity."
Tuchel highlighted that when he asked White if he would be ready to play for England, the defender responded without hesitation, expressing love for the chance and desperation to return. The manager noted White's exceptional training quality in camp but stressed the necessity of clearing the air with teammates, particularly those who were with him during the World Cup campaign.
"I think it is necessary that he clears the air with his team-mates, and I think he does, and I think he will once players come back who were in the World Cup together with him, and then we go from there," Tuchel explained. He added that White currently has his full support and expressed hope that the defender would also receive backing from spectators at Wembley.
Selection Controversy
White's inclusion has generated significant debate, particularly as it meant Tuchel made the bold decision to overlook Real Madrid star Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Liverpool-born defender was a shock exclusion from Tuchel's initial squad, and his omission in favour of White for this final camp before World Cup selection has sparked further discussion.
Tuchel defended his choice as a sporting decision, albeit a difficult and potentially unfair one. "The choice was for Ben White because I saw him play here in the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City. He played the Champions League match I think before and was straightaway back to his old self," the manager stated.
He explained that the selection provided an opportunity to meet White in person and observe his interactions within the group, while acknowledging the quality of other contenders like Tino Livramento and Djed Spence who are also fighting for World Cup tickets.
Managing Expectations
Regarding Alexander-Arnold's exclusion, Tuchel admitted: "I know that it creates noise when you leave a player like Trent out. We had a call. I tried to explain the situation, but he just has to accept it." The manager emphasised his commitment to sticking with players who have performed well in previous camps, ensuring they receive necessary minutes ahead of major tournament selection.
All eyes will now be on White's reception at Wembley and his ability to reintegrate successfully into the England setup as the team prepares for crucial friendlies and looks ahead to World Cup preparations under Tuchel's leadership.
