Tuchel Voices Disappointment Over Wembley Crowd's Mixed Reception for Ben White

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has expressed his disappointment after sections of the Wembley Stadium crowd booed defender Ben White during his long-awaited international return against Uruguay on Friday evening. The 28-year-old Arsenal player, making his first England appearance in four years, was introduced as the eighth and final substitute in a friendly that ended in a frantic 1-1 draw.

Eventful Comeback Marred by Fan Reaction and Late Drama

White's return to the England setup had been highly anticipated, given his self-imposed absence since the 2022 World Cup, which the Football Association attributed to personal reasons. However, his introduction was met with jeers from some supporters, a reaction that Tuchel described as disappointing. "I heard that he was booed," Tuchel stated. "I didn't hear it actually on the field because I was involved in the changes and instructions, so I didn't hear it so I think then it cannot be the majority."

The manager emphasised that White had earned his place through excellent performances in training camp and deserved his opportunity. "He deserved also to start and got us almost the winner," Tuchel added, referencing White's first international goal, which momentarily put England ahead. However, the drama intensified when White conceded a stoppage-time penalty, converted by Federico Valverde to level the score.

Tuchel Urges White to Move Forward Despite Setback

Addressing the mixed reception, Tuchel acknowledged that similar incidents have occurred at Wembley before but stressed the need for support. "He needs to take it on the chin," the England boss said. "We will always protect him and hopefully we can put it behind (us) because he is ready to write some new chapters and we are ready to give him the chance, so hopefully everyone can move on and accept it."

White's future involvement remains uncertain as Tuchel assesses fitness ahead of Tuesday's friendly against Japan, with 11 established players set to join the squad. The match was further overshadowed by injury concerns, as Phil Foden limped off after a reckless tackle by Ronald Araujo, and Noni Madueke was seen leaving the stadium in a knee brace following a first-half incident.

Controversial Officiating Adds to Frustration

Tuchel also voiced frustration with referee Sven Jablonski's performance, particularly the decision to award Uruguay's late penalty after a VAR review of White's challenge on Federico Vinas. "I think it's a very soft penalty," Tuchel remarked. "Of course there is contact, but it's so obvious what the striker is trying to do."

The manager questioned the consistency of VAR interventions, noting that tackles on Foden and Madueke were not reviewed. "I was surprised VAR is in place because I thought it's not working," he said, adding that Jablonski had a "bad day at the office." Despite the controversies, Tuchel emphasised the need to focus on upcoming challenges as England prepare for their next fixture.
