A veterinarian with a decade of experience has disclosed her personal list of the ten dog breeds she would consider owning, citing their temperaments and her own professional observations.
Vet's Top 10 Dog Breeds
Saddy, known on TikTok as @saddy542020, frequently uses social media to inform her followers about the realities of dog ownership. While acknowledging that every breed has its pros and cons, she believes these ten stand out for various reasons, including general temperament and lifestyle benefits.
In her post, she wrote: "We see lots of posts about breeds vet professionals wouldn't own, and while I agree with the majority of them, I feel like it's time to see the opposite of the narrative! All breeds have their unique personalities and health issues, but that shouldn't be the end-all, be-all. Again, this is personal preference based on personal experience and others don't have to agree."
1. Golden Retriever
The vet suggests a golden retriever is an all-around solid choice, calling them the "definition of man's best friends." She describes them as "extremely versatile, eager to please" and possessing the "best smoosh faces."
2. Pitbull Terrier
Saddy highlights pitbull terriers as a firm favourite due to their "powerful but gentle" nature. She notes they offer "scary dog privilege" and remain popular among vets for their affectionate disposition.
3. Greyhound
Turning to greyhounds, Saddy describes them as a "gentle and sweet-natured" breed. Despite their speed, they are not high-energy dogs; greyhounds are happiest lounging on the sofa after a short burst of exercise.
4. Collie
This breed, popularised by the Lassie films, is both beautiful and intelligent. Saddy describes them as "even tempered, intelligent and loyal."
5. Borzoi
These Russian sighthounds, historically used for wolf hunting, are athletic but tend to have calm and aloof personalities at home. Saddy describes them as "unique" with "very fun and silly personalities."
6. Boxer
High-energy boxers are "some of the happiest dogs alive," according to Saddy. They are loving, loyal, and often goofy.
7. Australian Shepherd
This breed makes great companions when well-bred and trained. Saddy loves them for being "bright and alert," which is why she recommends them.
8. Irish Setter
With sleek coats and charming personalities, Irish Setters are described as having the "best bed head" and being "great family dogs."
9. Irish Wolfhound
Saddy calls this huge breed a "gentle giant" that tends to be a "couch potato." They are loyal, protective, and ideal cuddle partners.
10. Cardigan Welsh Corgi
Unlike the Pembroke breed favoured by the Queen, Cardigan Welsh Corgis have longer bodies, bushy tails, and rounded ears. Saddy adores them for being "cheerful" and notes they have been around for over 3,000 years.
