England batsman Ben Duckett has made the significant decision to withdraw from the upcoming Indian Premier League season, a move designed to focus on salvaging his international cricket career. The left-handed opener, once hailed as a premier all-format player, has endured a substantial decline in performance since late last summer, managing just one score above fifty in his last 16 innings across various competitions.
Ashes Struggles and Off-Field Incident
Duckett's difficulties were particularly pronounced during the recent Ashes series, where his highest score reached only 42 runs. This challenging period on the pitch was further complicated by an off-field incident during a mid-series break in Noosa, where he was inadvertently filmed appearing intoxicated, with the video subsequently circulating online. The episode contributed to England implementing a midnight curfew for the squad, and Duckett has since expressed regret, stating, "I am sorry for that incident. It was not professional and shouldn't have happened."
Adding to his frustrations, Duckett was an unused squad member during England's T20 World Cup campaign in India and Sri Lanka, spending the tournament on the sidelines without featuring in a single match. Reflecting on this experience, he admitted, "Not playing in the World Cup and being on the sidelines in India after such a tough Ashes series was a struggle for me."

Facing intense scrutiny over his place in the Test side, Duckett has informed the Delhi Capitals of his withdrawal from the IPL, which commences this Saturday. Explaining his rationale to the Daily Telegraph, he said, "I'm desperate to play all three formats for England for as long as I can. This is a decision I hope I will look back on in 10 years and see as a pivotal moment in my career."
This withdrawal carries notable financial and professional repercussions. Players who make themselves unavailable after being purchased at auction without valid reasons such as injury risk facing a ban, potentially rendering Duckett ineligible for the IPL until 2029. Additionally, he forfeits a substantial £200,000 payday for this year's tournament.
Focus on County Cricket and Fitness
Instead of participating in the IPL, Duckett plans to return to Nottinghamshire to work intensively with head coach Peter Moores, aiming to address any technical flaws in his batting.
