Humpback Whale Timmy Released in North Sea After Stranding in Germany
Humpback Whale Timmy Released in North Sea

A humpback whale affectionately named 'Timmy' by German media was successfully released into the North Sea on Saturday, following months of being stranded in shallow waters off Germany's coast.

Timmy's Ordeal

The whale was first sighted near Germany's Baltic Sea coast on March 3, far from its natural Atlantic habitat. Its health deteriorated as it repeatedly became trapped in the shallows near Wismar, with unsuccessful attempts to guide it to deeper waters livestreamed globally.

Timmy suffered from a severe skin condition due to the Baltic Sea's low salt content, prompting rescuers to apply kilograms of zinc ointment. The whale often breathed irregularly and remained motionless for days, showing clear signs of distress.

The Rescue Operation

The rescue, proposed by a private initiative, received approval from the environment minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state, despite scientific warnings that intervention might stress the animal. Jens Schwarck, a member of the private team, confirmed the whale's release around 9 am local time, approximately 70 kilometres off the coast of Skagen, Denmark.

Drone footage captured a whale swimming and spouting water near the barge, though it was not immediately confirmed as Timmy. Before release, a GPS transmitter was attached to track the whale's future location, according to dpa.

Debate and Public Attention

A debate emerged over whether to let the whale die peacefully or attempt to return it to the Atlantic. Activists staged protests on Wismar beach calling for its liberation, while others supported new transport ideas. Some scientists believed the whale sought shallow waters due to weakness, but the private initiative's veterinarians deemed it fit for transport.

Local media produced dayslong livestreams, and online newspapers sent push alerts on Timmy's health developments, reflecting outsized public attention.

Uncertain Origins

It remains unclear why the whale entered the Baltic Sea, far from its Atlantic habitat. Experts suggest it may have lost its way while following a shoal of herring or during migration.
