Manchester United are plotting a significant midfield overhaul in the coming year, with a six-man shortlist of potential targets now in focus. The club's interest in Brighton & Hove Albion's Carlos Baleba has been reignited, though an immediate move appears unlikely.
Baleba Interest Remains But Summer Move More Likely
The Red Devils have made fresh contact with Brighton regarding the 21-year-old midfielder, having initially explored a deal last summer. However, the Seagulls' valuation, which was understood to exceed £100 million, cooled United's pursuit at the time.
According to the latest reports, Brighton plan to retain the Cameroon international until at least the summer of 2026. Baleba's current contract runs until 2028 and includes an option for a further one-year extension, putting the south coast club in a strong negotiating position.
The Six-Man Shortlist: From Established Stars to Young Prospects
Baleba is just one of several players being monitored by United's recruitment team. The club is also keeping tabs on a trio of established Premier League talents who would command significant fees.
Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson, Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton, and Wolverhampton Wanderers' Joao Gomes are all under consideration. Alongside these more experienced options, United are also tracking younger prospects with high potential.
The list includes Lille's 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi and Olympiakos teenager Christos Mouzakitis. The club's strategy suggests a dual approach: securing ready-made quality while also investing in future stars.
Amorim Plays Down January Activity Despite Ongoing Talks
Despite the clear interest in strengthening the engine room, United manager Ruben Amorim has publicly downplayed expectations of a busy January transfer window. Speaking ahead of his side's clash with Leeds United, the 40-year-old Portuguese coach indicated business would be quiet.
"The transfer window is not going to change," Amorim stated. "We have no conversations at this moment to have any change in the squad. There's a process, there's an idea that is going to continue."
He emphasised the need for focus on the pitch, adding: "We are near the places of the Champions League, but we are also near like eight teams behind us. So let's focus on the next game, just that."
Amorim also confirmed that no players had approached him about leaving the club in January. However, United are engaged in discussions regarding the future of young defender Harry Amass, who is currently on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.
The Championship club wishes to extend his stay, but Stoke City and Millwall are among a dozen sides reportedly keen on securing the player's services this month, indicating a potential bidding war.
While a major midfield signing this month seems improbable, United's extensive scouting work signals that significant investment in the position is a priority for the longer term, with the summer window likely to be the key period for activity.
