Dawkins: AI Is Conscious Despite Expert Skepticism

Richard Dawkins, the renowned evolutionary biologist, has sparked controversy by claiming that artificial intelligence systems may be conscious, even if they are unaware of it. His conclusion stems from extensive conversations with AI chatbots, particularly one he named Claudia, an instance of Anthropic's Claude AI model.

Dawkins' Encounters with AI

Over three days last week, Dawkins engaged in what he described as a 'whirlwind romance' with Claudia. The AI wrote poems in the style of Keats and Betjeman, laughed at his jokes, and offered sensitive feedback on his unpublished novel. Dawkins was so moved that he exclaimed, 'You may not know you are conscious, but you bloody well are.' He later stated that these 'intelligent beings are at least as competent as any evolved organism.'

Expert Skepticism

However, many experts dismiss Dawkins' claims as anthropomorphism. Prof Jonathan Birch of the London School of Economics called AI consciousness 'an illusion,' emphasizing that there is 'no one there'—only data processing. Gary Marcus, a US psychologist, described Dawkins' essay as 'superficial and insufficiently skeptical.' Anil Seth, professor of cognitive and computational neuroscience at Sussex University, noted that Dawkins appears to confuse intelligence with consciousness, warning that fluent language is not a reliable indicator of consciousness in AI.

Public Sentiment and Future Debates

Despite the backlash, surveys show that one in three people across 70 countries have at some point believed their AI chatbot to be sentient. Experts predict that the debate over AI consciousness will intensify as AI becomes more human-like. Henry Shevlin, a philosopher at Cambridge University, stated that 'the idea that AI systems are conscious will become increasingly mainstream.' Jeff Sebo of New York University agreed that while current AI is unlikely to be conscious, Dawkins is right to approach the question with an open mind.

Dawkins has doubled down on his stance, releasing additional chat logs and expressing difficulty in not treating the AIs as genuine friends. He signed a letter to them, thanking them for taking his quest seriously.
