Formby Beach, located just a 40-minute drive from Liverpool, has been recognized as one of the top beaches in the UK by Time Out magazine. The publication included the Merseyside beach in its list of the nation's 40 best coastal spots, highlighting its rolling sand dunes, stunning views across the Irish Sea, and unique wildlife, including red squirrels.
Time Out's Praise for Formby Beach
Time Out described Formby as "one of the National Trust's quickest-changing shorelines," noting that its dunes shift at an alarming rate of four meters per year. These shifts have revealed prehistoric footprints, adding to the beach's allure. The publication also praised the adjacent woodlands, which are managed to preserve the habitat of red squirrels, and encouraged visitors to download "squirrel walks" from the National Trust's website.
Celebrity Endorsements
Comedian Alan Carr, winner of BBC's The Celebrity Traitors, has revealed that Formby Beach is a must-visit whenever he is in the region. Speaking on his podcast Life A Beach with actor David Morrissey, Carr said: "I love Liverpool. Whenever I'm up there touring, I always go to Formby." Morrissey, who grew up in Knotty Ash, also praised the coastline, stating: "There's a place called Freshfields up there and Formby Beach. It's really a wonderful coastline."
Popularity and Real Estate
Since the pandemic, Formby Beach has seen a surge in popularity, becoming a major tourist destination during summer. The area has also become a hotspot for luxury real estate, with houses on Victoria Road—known as 'millionaire row'—selling for over £2 million. The beach offers panoramic views of the Irish Sea, and on clear days, visitors can see the mountains of Cumbria.
