Pufferfish Threat Emerges in Mediterranean Waters

British holidaymakers heading to the Mediterranean have been warned about a new underwater threat: the silver-cheeked pufferfish, scientifically known as Lagocephalus sceleratus. This species, native to the Indian Ocean, has entered the Mediterranean Sea through the Suez Canal and possesses teeth sharp enough to bite through a swimmer's toe or finger.

Incidents and Expert Warnings

Earlier this year, a Greek woman was bitten while swimming off the coast of the Varkiza resort near Athens, despite not provoking the fish. Nota Peristeraki, an expert from the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, told the Telegraph that attacks have occurred when people attempted to touch or feed the fish. Peristeraki stated: “Some attacks have happened when people have tried to feed or touch the fish. There have been a couple of cases of people losing a finger or a toe.”

Guidance from Greek Red Cross

The Greek Red Cross has issued guidance for those injured by the pufferfish. Immediate medical attention is required, and the wound should be cleaned with soap and water while applying pressure to stop bleeding. Although encounters are statistically unlikely, swimmers are urged to remain vigilant.

Heatwave Adds to Holiday Concerns

Beyond marine dangers, Europe is facing a severe heatwave, with temperatures forecast to reach 44°C in some regions. France has introduced alcohol bans at state-organized events, Germany has issued heat warnings for temperatures in the high thirties, and Portugal expects peak heat on Tuesday and Wednesday. Italy and Spain are also experiencing high temperatures, with storm alerts in place across the continent.

UK Heat Alert and Tropical Nights

In the UK, temperatures could reach 38°C, approaching the 40°C heatwave of 2022. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an amber health heat alert for parts of England, including London. Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Tom Crabtree warned of a double threat: “As well as very high daytime temperatures, there will be consecutive nights where temperatures do not drop below 20°C, which is called a Tropical Night. This will make it very hard for people to recover from the daytime heat, exacerbating the heat stress impacts.”
