Johnsons 1871 Removal Firm Enters Administration

In a significant development for the UK removals sector, a historic family-owned company that has been operating for over a century and a half has entered administration. Johnsons 1871, based in Northwich, Cheshire, appointed administrators on January 28, as confirmed by official records on The Gazette website.

A Legacy Dating Back to Victorian Times

The business, which takes its name from its founding year, was established in 1871 by Joseph Johnson. Originally, the company operated a fleet of horses and carts to assist with home removals across Cheshire and even delivered coal during winter months. Interestingly, before focusing on removals, Johnsons 1871 began as a glass and earthenware company, demonstrating its long history of adaptation and service.

Comprehensive Moving Services and Notable Clientele

Johnsons 1871 offered a wide range of services including home removals, storage facilities, office relocations, and cleaning services. The company prided itself on being a "complete moving, project management and installation partner" with an impressive client roster that included major organisations such as npower, the NHS, the Co-operative, B&Q, Barclays, and BBC Cymru Wales.

On its website, the company stated: "We've been providing relocation services for individuals and businesses as far back as 1871 and exist to provide you with an incredible experience, every time. Average is not an option for us, and since Joseph Johnson's first venture in 1871, we have striven to personify our brand values of care, integrity and respect."

Financial Position and Administration Details

According to its latest company accounts for the year ending March 2024, Johnsons 1871 reported a substantial turnover of £29 million, with profits standing at £56,291. Despite this significant revenue, the company has now entered administration.

Administrator Steve Muncaster from Leonard Curtis confirmed to the Express that the business was sold to Amer Logistics Limited on the same day administrators were appointed. This transaction has protected approximately 150 jobs within the company.

Mr Muncaster commented: "We are delighted to have completed a sale of this long-established business, so preserving the employment of the entire workforce, and allowing its extensive customer base to continue to work with the business."

No Official Comment from the Company

Johnsons 1871 has not issued any public statement regarding its decision to enter administration. The company's long history, spanning 155 years of service to British households and businesses, makes this development particularly notable within the removals and logistics industry.

The administration marks the end of an era for a business that began in Victorian times and adapted through multiple centuries of economic change, technological advancement, and shifting consumer needs in the UK removals market.
