Rory McIlroy to Pay Tribute to Absent Legends at Masters Champions Dinner

This year's Masters Champions Dinner will be missing two of golf's most iconic figures, but host Rory McIlroy has confirmed he will ensure they are not forgotten. The annual gathering, a cherished tradition at Augusta National, takes place just under two weeks after Tiger Woods' arrest for driving under the influence in Jupiter, Florida, which prompted his decision to step away from professional golf to focus on his health and treatment.

McIlroy's Plans for the Evening

In an interview with Golf Channel, McIlroy expressed his enthusiasm for the Tuesday evening event while outlining his intention to honour both Woods and Phil Mickelson. Mickelson will also be absent due to a family health issue, adding to the notable voids in the room.

'Unfortunately, there will be a couple of guys that won't be in that room, which is a shame,' said McIlroy, the reigning Masters champion, Irish Olympian, and Ryder Cup winner. 'But I want to make sure that they're acknowledged as well. They've been two of the greatest champions that the Masters has ever seen. But it's going to be a really cool night. I can't wait. I hope everyone enjoys the dinner and enjoys everything that I've selected.'

Tiger Woods' Recent Troubles

The 50-year-old Woods is currently seeking treatment following his arrest on March 27. Deputies reported finding two opioid painkillers in his pocket after he crashed his SUV. Authorities noted that Woods displayed 'several signs of impairment,' including 'bloodshot and glassy' eyes with 'extremely dilated pupils.'

In bodycam footage from the incident, the five-time Masters winner told police he was 'hoping to' play in the Masters but that it 'depends on y'all.' The crash occurred just days after Woods participated in the final day of the TGL virtual golf league, marking his first competitive golf since July 2024.

Phil Mickelson's Absence

Meanwhile, 55-year-old Phil Mickelson announced last week that he would be withdrawing from the Masters 'as my family continues to navigate a personal health matter.' His absence further underscores the unusual circumstances surrounding this year's dinner.

McIlroy's Hosting Honour

McIlroy earned the privilege of hosting the prestigious Champions Dinner after his playoff victory over Justin Rose, which secured his career grand slam. His role as host now includes bridging the gap for the missing legends, ensuring their legacy is celebrated despite their physical absence from the event.
