Clean Oven Grime with Baking Soda and Dish Soap – No Vinegar Needed
Clean Oven Grime with Baking Soda and Dish Soap

Ovens are among the most challenging appliances to keep clean, with food splatters and baked-on stains accumulating over time. Not only does this make the appliance look unsightly, but failing to remove tough grime can also reduce the oven's efficiency. Fortunately, there is a straightforward method to break through even the most stubborn food residues without resorting to harsh commercial cleaning products.

The Simple Two-Ingredient Solution

Chantel Mila, known as Mama Mila on TikTok, recently shared her favourite home hacks, including an effective oven-cleaning technique. The key ingredients are baking soda and washing-up liquid – no vinegar required.

How to Make the Cleaning Paste

To create the paste, combine one cup of baking soda with half a cup of washing-up liquid. Add a splash of water and mix until you achieve a smooth, spreadable consistency.

Application Process

Spread a generous layer of the paste over the oven door or interior, using a sponge to work it into the grime. Allow the paste to sit and break down the dirt. For best results, leave it on for several hours or even overnight for particularly tough stains.

Removing the Paste

After the paste has had time to work, use a glass or window scraper to remove it along with the loosened food marks. The result should be a sparkling clean oven. If any stubborn spots remain, simply wipe them away with a damp cloth.

Why This Method Works

Baking soda is alkaline, which helps neutralise the acid in grease, making it easier to lift. Its mild abrasive nature also helps remove stubborn particles without damaging surfaces. Washing-up liquid acts as an emulsifier, binding with grease and oil so they can be rinsed away with water.

The Science Behind It

Dish soaps contain surfactants that are both hydrophilic (attract water) and hydrophobic (repel water and bind to oil). These surfactants attach to grease, allowing oil and water to mix and form a stable emulsion that can be washed away. This combination makes the cleaning process smooth and effective.

By using this simple, non-toxic method, you can keep your oven clean and efficient without the need for harsh chemicals.
