Costco Adds Water Option to Iconic $1.50 Hot Dog Combo for First Time in Decades
Costco Adds Water to $1.50 Hot Dog Combo

For the first time in roughly four decades, Costco has added a new option to its legendary $1.50 hot dog combo. The warehouse retailer will now offer customers the choice of a 16.9-ounce bottle of Kirkland Signature water instead of a Coca-Cola soda.

Initial Rollout and Customer Reactions

Shoppers across California, Nevada, and Virginia have already noticed the change in their local food courts, though it remains unclear whether the water option will be available nationwide at Costco. For some customers, the $1.50 hot dog combo transcends mere food. 'It's about identity and emotional reward,' retail expert Ravi Sawhney told the Daily Mail. 'Over time, Costco has embedded this into the rhythm of the visit. It becomes the signal that you’ve completed the experience.'

Social media users echoed this sentiment, with one Reddit user dubbing the food court item 'the best deal' on a soda, as well as a great value for the hot dog itself. This marks the first major change to the combo since Costco replaced Pepsi products with Coke in its food courts last year.

Expert Insights on Costco's Strategy

Sawhney noted that while most retailers compete on discounts or convenience, Costco has built something more powerful: a cultural anchor within the shopping experience. 'That's incredibly difficult to replicate, which is why very few retailers have created anything comparable,' he added.

Retail expert Bryan Gildenberg told the Daily Mail that the hot dog combo serves as a 'symbol' of Costco's commitment to member value. 'Costco makes most of its profits selling memberships, not merchandise, and nothing reflects this better than a value statement they lose money on today,' Gildenberg said. He highlighted that few retailers can maintain such a long-term price commitment, noting that even Dollar Tree had to raise its iconic starting price to $1.25. However, Gildenberg clarified that Costco still 'hates losing money on anything they sell,' so it optimizes costs wherever possible, including supply chain efficiencies.

Business strategist Bob Phibbs agreed, calling the hot dog combo a 'loss leader, not a profit center.'

History and Price Stability

Costco first introduced its $1.50 quarter-pound hot dog and 20-ounce soda in 1985, and the price has remained unchanged ever since. Adjusted for inflation, the combo would cost an estimated $4.65 today. In 2022, former CFO Richard Galanti described the $1.50 price as 'sacrosanct,' revealing that the company sells around 130 million hot dogs annually.

Customers frequently seek reassurance that the price will remain stable. Earlier this year, CEO Ron Vachris confirmed the combo price will not increase 'as long as I'm around,' as he enjoyed the iconic menu item in a social media clip. 'Amazing quality. Amazing value. That's $1.50 well spent,' Vachris said after taking a bite.

Costco's food court remains one of America's most popular, known for ultra-cheap staples including pizza slices and the $3.99 chicken bake.
