The iconic BBC series Monarch Of The Glen is set to receive a modern reboot, this time centering on a female protagonist. The original programme, which aired from 2000 to 2005, chronicled the life of Archie MacDonald as he restored his ancestral home in the Scottish Highlands. Later series introduced Paul Bowman, a new laird attempting to modernise the estate.
New Direction for the Highlands Drama
According to reports, the reboot will air on Channel 5 and feature an entirely fresh cast. The narrative will revolve around Isla Campbell, a London-based lawyer who returns to her family's dilapidated Highlands estate following her father's funeral. Initially planning a brief stay, she discovers she has inherited a debt of one million pounds and faces imminent foreclosure. Together with her brother, she must fight to save the estate before it is lost forever.
Writer Jeremy Brock, known for his work on Amazon Prime Video's A Very Royal Scandal, expressed his enthusiasm for the project: 'When I was offered the chance to re-imagine Monarch of the Glen, I leapt at it. I'm hugely excited by the opportunity to tell a story of family life and finding your place in our hectic world – one that celebrates the warmth, humour and eccentricities of a special community, with both optimism and authenticity.' He added, 'Hope and joy are a currency in short supply right now, and the Highlands – one of the most magical places on Earth – felt like exactly the right home for them.'
Production Details and Legacy
Production is expected to commence in Scotland and Northern Ireland later this year. The castle that served as the backdrop for the original series also appeared in Netflix's The Crown, doubling as the Balmoral Estate. Last year, two original stars, Alastair Mackenzie and Dawn Steele, reunited to celebrate the show's 25th anniversary. Dawn shared photos on social media with the caption 'Just like old times,' and jokingly remarked, 'I don't think we've changed at all!'
