Urgent Recall Issued for Premium Medik8 Sunscreens Over SPF Concerns
An urgent product recall has been announced for three expensive sunscreen products from the brand Medik8, following serious concerns that they may fail to deliver their claimed Sun Protection Factor (SPF) levels. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), Australia's regulatory authority for therapeutic goods, has confirmed the recall action, which affects Medik8's Physical Sunscreen SPF50+ in multiple sizes.
Details of the Recalled Products and Pricing
The specific products involved in this safety alert include the Medik8 Physical Sunscreen SPF50+ in 60mL, 60mL Professional, and 15mL sizes. These items are being recalled by the product owner, AC Newco. Notably, the Physical Sunscreen SPF50+ in the 60mL size is listed online with a substantial price tag of $106, highlighting its premium positioning in the skincare market.
The TGA has issued a stark warning regarding the potential health risks associated with these sunscreens. In an official statement, the administration explained: 'There is a significant risk that a lower than labelled SPF rating may increase the likelihood of sunburn during use. Furthermore, this deficiency could substantially reduce the long-term effectiveness of the product in preventing skin cancer, a serious concern for public health.'
Sales Period and Geographic Distribution
The affected sunscreen batches were sold across both Australia and New Zealand during a specific timeframe. Consumers purchased these products between August 2023 and March 2026, indicating a relatively wide distribution period that necessitates broad public awareness.
Immediate Consumer Actions and Refund Procedures
The TGA has strongly urged all consumers who have purchased any of the recalled Medik8 sunscreens to cease using them immediately. To facilitate returns and refunds, the administration provided clear instructions: 'Consumers should return the product to their original place of purchase. Alternatively, they can contact the dedicated recall team via email at medik8spfrecall@acskingroup.com or by telephone at 02 7248 5617. To process a refund, photo evidence or valid proof of purchase must be provided.'
Company Response and Voluntary Recall Initiation
A spokesperson for Medik8 addressed the situation, confirming that there have been no reports of adverse effects from customers to date. The spokesperson elaborated: 'Following independent laboratory testing which suggested that the Medik8 Physical Sunscreen SPF 50+ may provide lower sun protection than advertised on its label, Medik8 has proactively initiated a voluntary recall. This action covers all unexpired batches sold in Australia and New Zealand between August 2023 and March 2026.'
The company further noted that this particular sunscreen formula has been discontinued from production. In their guidance to consumers, Medik8 advised: 'As this formula is no longer in production, consumers should stop using the product immediately. They should contact their point of purchase directly or visit the official recall webpage at medik8.com.au/pages/recall to arrange a full refund without delay.'
This recall underscores the critical importance of accurate SPF labelling in sunscreen products, particularly given their role in protecting against harmful ultraviolet radiation and reducing long-term skin cancer risks. Consumers are advised to remain vigilant and follow the outlined procedures to ensure their safety and obtain appropriate compensation.
