Ryanair has issued a warning to passengers regarding a specific type of bag that is not permitted in the aircraft hold, even if it meets all other size and weight requirements. The airline, known for its strict baggage policies, has clarified that smart bags equipped with built-in lithium batteries and USB charging ports cannot be checked in unless the battery is removed beforehand.
Smart Bag Restrictions
Smart bags, which are popular among travellers who carry multiple electronic devices, are subject to special regulations. According to Ryanair's official website, these bags may be accepted as hold luggage only if the lithium battery is taken out before check-in at the bag-drop desk or at the gate. The removed battery must be carried in the cabin, placed either in a small bag under the seat in front or on the passenger's person. It is strictly prohibited to store the battery in the overhead lockers.
Non-Removable Batteries Banned
For smart bags where the battery cannot be removed, Ryanair explicitly states that such bags are not permitted as checked baggage under any circumstances. Additionally, there is a 100Wh maximum capacity for batteries carried in the cabin, so passengers are advised to verify their battery's specifications before travelling.
Recent Policy Updates
Ryanair recently expanded its free under-seat bag allowance, increasing the permitted dimensions by 20% to 40x30x20cm. These bags have no weight restrictions, though they must be light enough for passengers to handle themselves. The airline also announced that from 10 November, check-in and bag drop deadlines will be extended to 60 minutes before departure, up from the current 40 minutes, to allow more time for security and passport queues.
In a light-hearted social media post, Ryanair joked about charging talkative passengers on early morning flights, proposing a fee for those who disturb others. However, this is not a formal policy change.
