Santander is set to permanently close 13 branches within days, as part of a wider plan to shut 44 sites across the UK. The Spanish banking giant announced earlier this year that it would close these branches due to a significant shift towards online services among its customers.
Closures Begin Next Week
The first four branches closed before the end of January, with a further 40 sites scheduled to close throughout April and May. Thirteen branches are due to close on either Monday or Tuesday next week, spanning England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The remaining locations are expected to shut by the end of May.
When the announcement was made in January, the bank revealed that 96% of all transactions were now conducted online. At that time, it was confirmed that 291 jobs were at risk as a result of the closures, though the exact number of positions ultimately lost remains unclear.
Previous Wave of Closures
These latest shutdowns follow a wave of branch closures in 2025. In March 2025, Santander announced the closure of 95 branches, putting 750 employees at risk. Then in July 2025, the bank's then UK chief executive Mike Regnier revealed that approximately 2,000 jobs had been cut in 2024 as part of a wider restructuring programme, adding that further job losses 'might well be' likely.
Alternative Services Available
Santander has confirmed that any branches impacted by the closures will have alternatives available, in the form of 'community bankers' through Santander Local stores or shared banking hubs. The bank stated that this would mean customers in affected areas will still be able to access services face-to-face.
